Supply chain finance to support exporting activities : a case study approach

Purpose, originality and value – This research project’s objective is to fill an identified gap of the existing scientific literature: the lack of a clear understanding of how SCF can support the exports of a company. Therefore, the thesis originality and value are provided by the insights emerged from the case study analysis and the design of a framework relating SCF solutions to the main variables of international trade. Design, methodology and approach – This research followed a four-step process. The first step was the literature review, which aim was to identify the main gaps in the existing scientific literature. The findings from this phase allowed the design of the preliminary research framework. Such framework and findings were subsequently tested through the third phase of case studies. Lastly, the updated research framework was developed on the basis of the findings emerged from the case study analysis and the results of the research were explained. Findings – The results of the research are the detailed description of the use of SCF solutions by exporting companies, with a complete overview of the peculiarities of such instruments employed in an international trade context and of the differences between the domestic one. For this aim, a focus has been on how costs related to the NOWC Financing Needs and the mitigation of risks impact their adoption and their use. Practical and managerial implications – The updated research framework provides a clear scheme that, combined with the detailed description of the methods with which different SCF solutions are adopted and implemented by exporters to manage their NOWC financing needs and to mitigate theire transactions’ risk, is the major contribution to the managerial perspective. Limits and future research – The main limitation is given by the lack of the importers’ perspective regarding the implementation of SCF solutions. Their point of view is needed to provide a complete model of the adoption and use of SCF inside the international trade field. A possible direction for future research could be to expand the selection of companies, by also including the importers, to gather insights on their perspective, and to build a model fruitful to both categories of actors.

Scopo, originalità e valore – L'obiettivo di questa ricerca è quello di colmare un gap identificato nella letteratura scientifica esistente: la mancanza di una chiara comprensione di come il SCF possa supportare le esportazioni di un'azienda. Pertanto, l'originalità e il valore della tesi sono forniti dagli approfondimenti emersi dall'analisi dei casi studio e dalla progettazione di un framework che mette in relazione le soluzioni SCF con le principali variabili del commercio internazionale. Design, metodologia e approccio – Questa ricerca ha seguito un processo in quattro fasi. Il primo passo è stato la revisione della letteratura scinetifica, il cui obiettivo era identificare le principali lacune nella letteratura odierna. I risultati di questa fase hanno consentito la progettazione del framework di ricerca preliminare. Tale framework e risultati sono stati successivamente testati attraverso la terza fase dei casi studio. Infine, sulla base dei risultati emersi dall'analisi dei casi studio, è stato aggiornato il framework di ricerca e sono stati illustrati i risultati. Risultati – I risultati della ricerca sono la descrizione dettagliata dell'utilizzo delle soluzioni SCF da parte delle aziende esportatrici, con una panoramica completa delle peculiarità di tali strumenti impiegati in un contesto di commercio internazionale e delle differenze con quello domestico. A tal fine, l'attenzione si è concentrata sul modo in cui i costi relativi alle esigenze di finanziamento del NOWC e alla mitigazione dei rischi influiscono sulla loro adozione e sul loro utilizzo. Implicazioni pratiche e gestionali – Il quadro di ricerca aggiornato fornisce uno schema chiaro che, completato dalla descrizione dettagliata dei metodi con cui le diverse soluzioni SCF sono adottate e implementate dagli esportatori per gestire le loro esigenze di finanziamento del NOWC e per mitigare il rischio delle loro transazioni, è il principale contributo manageriale. Limiti e ricerca futura – Il limite di tale ricerca è dato dalla mancanza della prospettiva degli importatori riguardo all'implementazione delle soluzioni SCF. Il loro punto di vista è necessario per fornire un modello completo dell'adozione e dell'uso di SCF nel campo del commercio internazionale. Una possibile direzione per la ricerca futura potrebbe essere quella di ampliare la selezione delle aziende, includendo anche gli importatori, per effettuare approfondimenti sulla loro prospettiva e costruire un modello completo ed utile ad entrambe le categorie di attori.
