La boussole par et pour les femmes. Habiter le paysage les georges de la Loire, Firminy

The final thesis project, situated at the end of my academic cursus, is at the same time the end of a cycle - as a student - and the beginning of a new one - as a professional. It is the synthesis of a reflection in writing and in drawing : a global approach around a common problem. My cursus is a bit peculiar : I am part of a Double Degree Program between the Politecnico di Milano and the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture Paris Val de Seine in French. I benefited of the teaching of French professor, and also of Italian professors during the last year of my thesis. I wanted to put women in the spotlight and at the heart of my project, while trying to have a research approach. This research is an opportunity, on the one hand, to support my knowledge and better understand the world of architecture by taking a step back from my learning. On the other hand, it allows me to find new ways of thinking during the exercise of the project and new references. Finally, it allows a dialogue between the attempt at critical thinking and the manipulation of space and its components, with a political and social dimension. This dimension is, in my opinion, essential to architecture. The approach of the project and the thesis one took place in concert, allowing permanent back and forth between writing and drawing. This movement allowed me to do a work of introspection on my background, my strengths, my weaknesses and my convictions, and then a work of questioning these same convictions. During my studies, a sentence marked me : architecture is made by men and for men. Hearing it, a multitude of questions started to appear and I knew it was the starting point of my reflexions. In my mémoire, Architecture by and for women, I was interested in what an architecture made by and for women implied on the scale of the function of being an architect, but also on the scale of architectural production. Power relations in the discipline of architecture, whether conscious or unconscious, are more than interesting to deal with: they are essential. Essential to understand the norms that govern this discipline, essential to reveal another facet of reality and History. This thesis attempts to observe architecture through a feminine prism, both in being and in making. The architectural part of the thesis, the project, is a personal project developed in a common dynamic and a common territory. Indeed, it is part of a collective approach, shared with a group of six students: we have chosen a common site, where our individual projects are complementary, respond to each other, create a link. When the time came to reflect on the subjects and themes that I wanted to address in my end-of-study project and my mémoire, I was driven by the desire to talk about women and their relationship to architecture. It seems to me essential to put yourself into your project. The project and the mémoire being the cornerstone of my years of study in architecture school, I did not imagine putting only my mind to work there. It is also with my heart and my guts that I want to think. The project is a building for women situated next to Firminy, France, in the Loire gorges. This building is a common place for women to share, learn, rest, and grow with each other. A big part of the work, besides the program and the people inhabiting the building, is done on the geometry, the landscape, the link to the slope and the context of the territory. Here, in the project, I want to find ways to restore the current situation of imbalance. I am aware that the subject treated here is heavy and may seem negative. It can also be controversial and difficult to capture and defend in a still very patriarchal world of architecture. However, I have always seen architecture as a field where open-mindedness and inclusion advocate. As architects, we produce for everyone. It is our duty to think about places for minorities and to give them exceptional spaces as well. Here, I give women the privilege of the view towards a magnificent landscape. I want to give them a unique space in a territory from which they were originally excluded. I hope that this building will not be constrained by its current program. We can very well imagine a near -idealistic- future where women will no longer suffer from sexism and which will lead the building to change its destination. It is necessary to project the design of a building beyond the initial program to create spaces that remain in the socio-political context of a specific era.

Il progetto di tesi finale, situato alla fine del mio cursus accademico, è allo stesso tempo la fine di un ciclo - da studente - e l'inizio di uno nuovo - da professionista. È la sintesi di una riflessione per iscritto e per disegno: un approccio globale attorno a un problema comune. Il mio curriculum è un po' particolare: faccio parte di un programma di doppia laurea tra il Politecnico di Milano e l'École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture Paris Val de Seine in francese. Ho beneficiato dell'insegnamento di professori di francese, e anche di professori italiani durante l'ultimo anno della mia tesi. Volevo mettere le donne sotto i riflettori e al centro del mio progetto, cercando di avere un approccio di ricerca. Questa ricerca è un'opportunità, da un lato, per supportare le mie conoscenze e comprendere meglio il mondo dell'architettura facendo un passo indietro rispetto al mio apprendimento. D'altra parte, mi permette di trovare nuovi modi di pensare durante l'esercizio del progetto e nuove referenze. Infine, permette un dialogo tra il tentativo di pensiero critico e la manipolazione dello spazio e delle sue componenti, con una dimensione politica e sociale. Questa dimensione è, a mio avviso, essenziale per l'architettura. L'approccio del progetto e quello della tesi sono avvenuti di concerto, consentendo un continuo alternarsi tra scrittura e disegno. Questo movimento mi ha permesso di fare un lavoro di introspezione sul mio background, i miei punti di forza, le mie debolezze e le mie convinzioni, e poi un lavoro di messa in discussione di queste stesse convinzioni. Durante i miei studi, una frase mi ha segnato: l'architettura è fatta dagli uomini e per gli uomini. Sentendolo, iniziarono ad apparire una moltitudine di domande e sapevo che era il punto di partenza delle mie riflessioni. Nel mio mémoire, Architettura di e per le donne, mi interessava cosa implicasse un'architettura fatta da e per le donne sulla scala della funzione di architetto, ma anche sulla scala della produzione architettonica. I rapporti di potere nella disciplina dell'architettura, siano essi consci o inconsci, sono più che interessanti da affrontare: sono essenziali. Essenziale per comprendere le norme che regolano questa disciplina, essenziale per svelare un altro aspetto della realtà e della Storia. Questa tesi tenta di osservare l'architettura attraverso un prisma femminile, sia nell'essere che nel fare. La parte architettonica della tesi, il progetto, è un progetto personale sviluppato in una dinamica comune e in un territorio comune. Fa infatti parte di un approccio collettivo, condiviso con un gruppo di sei studenti: abbiamo scelto un luogo comune, dove i nostri progetti individuali sono complementari, si rispondono, creano un collegamento. Quando è arrivato il momento di riflettere sui temi e sui temi che volevo affrontare nel mio progetto di fine studi e nel mio mémoire, sono stato spinto dal desiderio di parlare delle donne e del loro rapporto con l'architettura. Mi sembra essenziale metterti nel tuo progetto. Essendo il progetto e il mémoire la pietra angolare dei miei anni di studio alla scuola di architettura, non immaginavo di metterci solo la mente per lavorare. È anche con il mio cuore e le mie viscere che voglio pensare. Il progetto è un edificio per donne situato vicino a Firminy, in Francia, nelle gole della Loira. Questo edificio è un luogo comune in cui le donne possono condividere, imparare, riposare e crescere l'una con l'altra. Gran parte del lavoro, oltre al programma e alle persone che abitano l'edificio, è svolto sulla geometria, il paesaggio, il legame con il versante e il contesto del territorio. Qui, nel progetto, voglio trovare il modo di ripristinare l'attuale situazione di squilibrio. Sono consapevole che l'argomento qui trattato è pesante e può sembrare negativo. Può anche essere controverso e difficile da catturare e difendere in un mondo dell'architettura ancora molto patriarcale. Tuttavia, ho sempre visto l'architettura come un campo in cui l'apertura mentale e l'inclusione promuovono. Come architetti, produciamo per tutti. È nostro dovere pensare ai luoghi delle minoranze e anche dare loro spazi eccezionali. Qui, do alle donne il privilegio della vista verso un paesaggio magnifico. Voglio dare loro uno spazio unico in un territorio dal quale originariamente erano esclusi. Spero che questo edificio non sia vincolato dal suo attuale programma. Possiamo benissimo immaginare un futuro prossimo - idealistico - in cui le donne non soffriranno più di sessismo e che porterà l'edificio a cambiare destinazione. È necessario proiettare il progetto di un edificio oltre il programma iniziale per creare spazi che rimangano nel contesto socio-politico di una determinata epoca.
