Il deserto e i giganti. La risignificazione degli antichi acquedotti della Campagna romana attraverso l'esperienza dei suoi paesaggi

The one told in this work is the story of a territory in which the fates of two great actors are intertwined: the ancient aqueducts, the giants of water, and the Roman countryside, the desert. I imagined telling it as if I were on my way from the south to Rome, and as if I were leading you, who are reading me. Crossing the vast countryside that sews the city to the Castelli Romani, the aqueduct accompanies and guides our path. Then, as we enter the city, we soon lose our orientation. Prey to chaotic and unregulated urbanisation, Rome has gradually eroded its open land, which today survives in fragments within the marginal city, hiding the signs of its ancient landscapes. In a similar process of progressive approach, this work intends to start from the substructure of the portion of space between the Parco degli Acquedotti and Porta Maggiore, the ancient point of arrival of the conduits, to gradually superimpose the natural and anthropic stratifications, the readings and interpretations that have been given over time. In this ascending layering, which recomposes the palimpsest of the territory like a vertical mosaic, the aqueduct emerges as the primary sign of spatial structuring, bringing together distinct levels of interpretation and distant parts of the city. A stratified knowledge of the territory, however, in order to reconstruct a complete picture, lacks a final level: the subjective experience of those who cross the space, observing and reading the palimpsest of landscapes offered to their eyes. In this connection lies the centrality of the re-signification of the route of the giants of water: as primary linear anthropic structures aqueducts, like roads, are still able to direct movement and order the reading of space. Restoring the walkability along their line is offered as a possible key to the wider actualization of the territory, working on the ability to connect the widespread heritage and the fragments of the Roman Agro and to evoke the landscapes that compose its palimpsest.

Quella raccontata in questo libro è la storia di un territorio in cui si intrecciano le sorti di due grandi attori: gli antichi acquedotti, i giganti dell’acqua, e la campagna romana, il deserto. Ho immaginato di raccontarla come se fossi in cammino da sud verso Roma, e come se stessi conducendo te, che mi stai leggendo. Varcando la vasta campagna che cuce la città ai Castelli romani, l’acquedotto accompagna e guida i nostri passi. Poi, addentrandoci nella città, presto perdiamo l’orientamento. Preda di un’urbanizzazione caotica e sregolata, Roma ha gradualmente eroso il suo territorio aperto, che oggi sopravvive per frammenti all’interno della città marginale, occultando i segni dei suoi antichi paesaggi. In un simile processo di avvicinamento progressivo, questo lavoro intende partire dalla sotto-struttura della porzione di spazio compresa tra il Parco degli Acquedotti e Porta Maggiore, antico punto di arrivo dei condotti, per gradualmente sovrapporvi le stratificazioni naturali e antropiche, le letture e le interpretazioni che ne sono state date nel tempo. In questo layering ascendente che ricompone, come un mosaico in verticale, il palinsesto del territorio, l’acquedotto emerge come segno primario di strutturazione dello spazio, mettendo a sistema distinti livelli di lettura e distanti brani di città. Una stratificata conoscenza del territorio, per ricostruire un quadro d’insieme completo, ha bisogno di un ultimo livello: l’esperienza soggettiva di chi attraversa lo spazio, osservando e leggendo il palinsesto di paesaggi che si offre ai suoi occhi. In questo nesso risiede la centralità della risignificazione del tracciato dei giganti dell’acqua: in quanto strutture antropiche primarie e lineari gli acquedotti, al pari delle strade, sono ancora in grado di orientare il movimento e ordinare la lettura dello spazio. Il ripristino della percorribilità lungo il loro tracciato si offre come una possibile chiave per la più ampia attualizzazione del territorio, lavorando sulla capacità di connettere il patrimonio diffuso e i frammenti di Campagna romana e di evocare i paesaggi che compongono il suo palinsesto.
