Narratives from the sea. Interpreting landscapes from oceanic and coastal practices

The subject of this thesis concerns with how data driven research can provide a way of reading landscapes from a set of practices / activities performed at sea. These practices are chosen to be the starting point of the interpretation so as to ‘re-orient’ the way we ‘construct’ and read landscape. By studying practices, we change the perception of our landscapes in two ways : 1. By depicting them as spatial - organizational images which gives us an idea of the landscape without necessarily attaching a ‘ picture’ of it in our minds. This approach also deepens our knowledge of experiential intimacies of engagement, participation and transformation of the landscapes in time.”(Performance in landscape)” Since practices are temporal, the process of interpretation also urges us to view landscapes from a temporal perspective and not just geography. 2. We portray them as areas of operation and get a scientific understanding of the environment that creates conditions able to support the activities. “(Performance of landscapes)” The practices are chosen based on those that transcend the binaries of terrain, ground, shore and sea. This approach creates a critical understanding and reflection of which practices can be sustained in the long run and reflecting how this tool could be used to making strategic decisions for our landscape and who / what is represented in it.

L'argomento di questa tesi riguarda il modo in cui la ricerca basata sui dati può fornire un modo per leggere i paesaggi da un insieme di pratiche/attività svolte in mare. Queste pratiche sono scelte come punto di partenza dell'interpretazione in modo da "riorientare" il modo in cui "costruiamo" e leggiamo il paesaggio. Studiando le pratiche, cambiamo la percezione dei nostri paesaggi in due modi: 1. Rappresentandole come immagini spazio-organizzative che ci danno un'idea del paesaggio senza necessariamente allegarne un'immagine nella nostra mente. Questo approccio approfondisce anche la nostra conoscenza delle intimità esperienziali di coinvolgimento, partecipazione e trasformazione dei paesaggi nel tempo.”(Performance in landscape)” Poiché le pratiche sono temporali, il processo di interpretazione ci spinge anche a vedere i paesaggi da una prospettiva temporale e non solo geografica. 2. Li rappresentiamo come aree operative e otteniamo una comprensione scientifica dell'ambiente che crea condizioni in grado di supportare le attività. “(Performance di paesaggi)” Le pratiche sono scelte in base a quelle che trascendono i binari di terreno, terra, riva e mare. Questo approccio crea una comprensione critica e una riflessione su quali pratiche possono essere sostenute a lungo termine e riflette come questo strumento potrebbe essere utilizzato per prendere decisioni strategiche per il nostro paesaggio e chi/cosa vi è rappresentato.
