The majority of Blind and Visually Impaired People (BVIP) employ screen reader assistive technology for browsing the web. Despite being the most effective, available technology, screen readers often lack usability and are unable to support the visual experience sighted users are accustomed to. Multiple studies have underlined the urgent need to improve user engagement, ultimately raising the possibility of an alternative interaction paradigm based on natural language dialogue. The state-of-the-art major flaws present as a common point the absence of a targeted design including end-users in the process. This implies that the user-centred and participatory design approach is necessary to reach accessibility improvements. This study was conducted on the idea of promising foundations of these methodologies, with the purpose of defining feasible solutions to improve browsing usability via conversation. A close collaboration between designer and user was made possible thanks to the associations “Unione Italiana Ciechi ed Ipovedenti” (UICI) e “Real Eyes Sport”. The research protocol was entirely carried out by adopting an iterative human-centred design process: BVIP have been not only inquired but actively involved in each step, allowing us to deeply investigate challenges, needs and wishes and eventually outline the definition of the new paradigm for Conversational Web Browsing (ConWeb). The observation of browsing behaviours sustained the notion of conversational patterns primarily concerning the orientational process, in order to support the creation of browsing mental maps to cover main navigational tasks. Patterns have been further developed, improving their in-context application through focus groups and co-design sessions and ultimately integrated into a software platform. The dialogue flow behind ConWeb allows the user to naturally converse with the interface resulting in a cognitive effort reduction and enhanced experience. An advanced design of the ConWeb paradigm applied to the Wikipedia navigation scenario was ultimately demoed and validated, allowing a final data collection that proves its validity and lays the way for future applications and developments.
Quasi la totalità delle persone non vedenti ed ipovedenti (BVIP) utilizza la tecnologia assistiva dei sistemi screen reader l’accesso al web. Nonostante rappresenti un’opzione efficace, gli screen reader mancano di usabilità e non sono in grado di garantire un’esperienza di qualità analoga a quella fornita attraverso medium visivo. Molteplici studi espongono la necessità di miglioramento dell’esperienza utente, sottolineando la possibilità di un paradigma di interazione alternativo basato sul linguaggio naturale. Analizzando lo stato dell’arte, la problematica comune coincide con l’assenza di inclusione iterativa dell’utente. Ciò implica che la progettazione partecipativa centrata sulla persona sia necessaria per un miglioramento dell’accessibilità. Lo scopo di questo studio è la definizione di soluzioni fattibili volte a migliorare l'usabilità di navigazione tramite conversazione. Una collaborazione tra progettisti ed utente finale è stata resa possibile grazie alle associazioni "Unione Italiana Ciechi ed Ipovedenti" (UICI) e "Real Eyes Sport". Il protocollo di ricerca è stato realizzato adottando una metodologia iterativa basata sul coinvolgimento attivo della persona in ogni fase progettuale, permettendo di indagare requisiti per la definizione del paradigma conversazionale ConWeb. La ricerca basata sui bisogni degli utenti ha sostenuto la definizione di modelli (patterns) conversazionali riguardanti principalmente il processo orientativo, al fine di supportare la creazione di mappe mentali di navigazione per soddisfare i principali obiettivi di accesso online. I pattern sono stati sviluppati, migliorando la loro applicazione contestualizzata attraverso sessioni di co-design, ed infine integrati in una piattaforma software. Il design alla base ConWeb consente all'utente un dialogo naturale con l'interfaccia, con conseguente riduzione dello sforzo cognitivo ed un miglioramento dell’esperienza. Una progettazione avanzata del paradigma ConWeb applicato allo scenario di interazione di Wikipedia è stato infine testato tramite demo e valutato, permettendo un’importante raccolta dati finale che ne testimonia la validità attuale e potenziale in applicazioni future.
