Abstract
The ageing process represents a predominant trend, and Europe is currently recording the highest percentage of elderly in the world. The progressive increase in the dependency ratio between the older people and the working-age population involves the growth in public spending related to the ageing process. This tendency imposes on the welfare system the need to identify alternative solutions that can respond in an innovative, effective and sustainable way to the various critical issues posed by this phenomenon, thus transforming the challenge of the ageing process into an opportunity for the future society. The policy of ageing in place, understood as a strategy aimed at supporting independent and quality ageing within a specific living environment, represents a possible solution, involving the acknowledgement of the close link between the ageing process and the built environment in which it takes place. Through a multi-scalar design approach, which considers the built environment in its three main dimensions – the home, the building and the neighbourhood –, it is necessary to rethink the traditional concept of home and city. The goal is to pinpoint innovative solutions that tackle the limits of the built environment, thus supporting the ageing process. The idea of a home for life, intended as a house capable of dynamic transformation over time, can be a design tool to support the ageing in place. Variety of types, flexibility, inclusiveness and universal accessibility are the basic requirements of a new idea of a home capable of supporting and anticipating the different needs of dwellers. The principles of intergenerational mixité and integration aim at encouraging social interaction and fostering the development of an informal support community within an age-friendly city, a safe and accessible place able to endorse active and quality ageing that may allow the full realization of the potential of the older population.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
