Nascent industries : a bibliometric analysis of the current literature and future research agenda

PURPOSE: With the support of an innovative methodology, this review allowed to identify the most prominent research areas in the field of nascent industries and shed light on knowledge gaps in the current state of the art, outlining a consistent research agenda for future analyses. METHODOLOGY: This Master Thesis employed an innovative method for knowledge mapping called Systematic Literature Network Analysis (SLNA), which combines the scientific approach of Systematic Literature Review with quantitative-based bibliometric analyses of bibliographic networks. In detail, I relied on three bibliometric techniques (Keywords Co-occurrence Analysis, Data Clustering, Global Citation Scores). FINDINGS: Bibliometric techniques allowed to identify different thematic areas, seminal contributions and emerging trends to the field of study, leading to the identification of five main research areas. More precisely, the first research area encompasses research on an additional stage of industries, beyond the traditional life-cycle model: the incubation stage. The second highlights the legitimation of a nascent industry through both a supply- and demand-side perspectives. The third includes research on the antecedents of market entry, contingencies, and performance consequences. The fourth summarizes different factors enabling the growth of a nascent industry. The fifth unveils the role of institutions. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS: Due to the ever-evolving and cross-disciplinary nature of the literature, limitations have been mainly associated to the issue of defining the boundaries of the research investigation and, therefore, identifying consistent articles to be selected. In the concluding section, I extensively discuss further limitations on the underlying assumptions of the employed research methodology. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: By mapping the extant body of research studies, this Master Thesis offers a systematic framework of the state of the art and establishes research directions where the current state of the knowledge requires further investigation. In the concluding section, I discuss practical implications for managers and policymakers. ORIGINALITY: The innovativeness of this Master Thesis lies on the application of a leading-edge methodology which enables to examine the extant body of literature from a dynamic and systematic perspective. This research work allows scholars to acknowledge the reliability of this methodology in a fragmented domain.

SCOPO: Con il supporto di una metodologia innovativa, questa Tesi ha individuato le più autorevoli aree di ricerca e le principali lacune nella letteratura nel campo delle industrie emergenti, delineando una agenda di ricerca strutturata per guidare analisi future. METODOLOGIA: Questa rassegna ha impiegato una metodologia innovativa di mappatura della conoscenza, chiamata Systematic Literature Network Analysis (SLNA), la quale combina l’approccio scientifico della rassegna sistematica della letteratura con analisi bibliometriche della rete bibliografica. In particolare, ho utilizzato tre tecniche bibliometriche (Keywords Co-occurrence Analysis, Data Clustering, Global Citation Scores). RISULTATI: Le tecniche bibliometriche hanno permesso di identificare diverse aree tematiche, i contributi più influenti e i più promettenti trend di ricerca in materia, individuando cinque aree di analisi principali. Più precisamente, la prima area di ricerca fa riferimento ad un’ulteriore fase nello sviluppo di un’industria, oltre il modello tradizionale del “ciclo di vita” (life-cycle): la fase di incubazione. La seconda descrive il processo di legittimazione di un’industria emergente attraverso prospettive orientate a lato domanda e lato offerta. La terza fa riferimento agli antecedenti all’ingresso di un’impresa in un mercato, le contingenze e le relative conseguenze in termini di performance. La quarta riassume i diversi fattori che abilitano la crescita di un’industria emergente. La quinta presenta il ruolo delle istituzioni. LIMITI DELLA RICERCA: Data la natura in divenire e cross-disciplinare della ricerca nel campo delle industrie emergenti, le principali limitazioni sono state associate alla difficoltà di definire il perimetro di ricerca e, dunque, nell’individuare coerentemente i contributi da selezionare. Nel capitolo conclusivo di questa Tesi, presenterò ulteriori limitazioni legate ai principi fondanti delle tecniche bibliometriche impiegate. IMPLICAZIONI PRACTICHE: Attraverso la mappatura della letteratura, questa Tesi fornisce un’inquadratura sistematica dello stato dell’arte e definisce le traiettorie di ricerca laddove il presente livello di conoscenza necessita ulteriori approfondimenti. Nel capitolo conclusivo di questa Tesi, presenterò inoltre le implicazioni pratiche della mia ricerca per imprese e autorità istituzionali. ORIGINALITÀ: L’innovazione di questo lavoro di tesi si ritrova nell’impiego di una metodologia d’avanguardia, la quale permette di analizzare la letteratura corrente attraverso un approccio dinamico e sistematico. Inoltre, questo lavoro di ricerca permette di prendere coscienza dell’affidabilità e robustezza di questa metodologia, anche quando impiegata nell’analisi di un contesto frammentato.
