Built structure’s ability to respond to new social, technical, and environmental requirements drops behind those variables’ pace. With the help of literature reviews and case studies, its strategies, key features, and possible outcomes have been studied to support this hypothesis. After the theoretical discussion, a project that aims to be used as an experiential tool for the temporary reuse of abandoned buildings has been proposed. Its main objective has been to improve the regeneration processes by designing a system that can adopt itself into different variations for the needs of communities. And through its application to one of the buildings in La Goccia (Bovisa, Milan), its ability to form a rich spatial experience has been tested.

Abstract
Built structure’s ability to respond to new social, technical, and environmental requirements drops behind those variables’ pace. Buildings constructed through precious sources undergo a dismission process as a consequence of unmet expectations. The world is now dealing with a large stock of derelict buildings, and its impact on habitats and communities has been one of the main problems for many decades. Stakeholders tried to answer this problem for a long time through widely appreciated adaptive reuse practice which is a strategy to revive and flourish the underused buildings by restoring the structures for a new purpose. Although, it has been a successful intervention for many buildings, new approaches need to be produced because the permanent functions made with fixed structures were again not enough for the even more fluid society of today. As a consequence, another alternative called temporary reuse has emerged in recent years. Proposing a strategy that aims to use abandoned buildings for a limited period of time, temporary use offers an opportunity to understand and test the needs of society before a definitive use. Furthermore, its common strategies permit quick and reversible solutions in the intervention areas and reconnect the unused buildings ties with users. Therefore this thesis proposes the temporary reuse practice as an effective alternative for the reactivation of abandoned buildings and claims it as an experimental urban planning tool that can reinvent public spaces by responding to the dynamic need of society. And through its application to one of the buildings in La Goccia (Bovisa, Milan), its ability to form a rich spatial experience has been tested.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
