Valorizzazione e riuso dei luoghi della formazione. Il caso dell'asilo San Michele in Bellinzago Lombardo

The thesis defines an intervention strategy intended for the reformulation and the redefinition of the spaces of the “San Michele Arcangelo” kindergarten and oratorio in Bellinzago Lombardo (MI). In the making of the project, particular attention and emphasis were put on the compliance of the spaces with the community’s new demands. These new needs have sprung from the post-pandemic situation and, on the other hand, from the social and demographic changes that are taking place within the province and the town’s territory. The interruption of the scholastic activities of the kindergarten, caused by the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, generated the need for the adjustment of the school’s spaces in accordance with the present regulations, making the revision of the spaces and of the educational offer compulsory. All of the above had led to thinking with greater attention on the potential offered by the area, and therefore to a general recovery and revitalization not only of the building hosting the kindergarten, but also of the surrounding appurtenances. Therefore, the ultimate goal is to increase the community participation and improve the kindergarten’s educational offer. The generating stimulus to the improvement of the social cohesion within the members of the community has been represented by the regeneration of an old vegetable garden belonging to the vicarage, easily accessible from the kindergarten and therefore prone to a transformation into a didactic garden. The execution of the garden involved a group of voluntary Bellinzago citizens, who started to re-discover the buildings and the spaces of the oratorio, along with their importance for the community. The interest and the liveliness generated within the town from the execution of works laid the foundations for the development of the thesis. At the moment the spaces of the kindergarten and of the oratorio are oversized, even exaggerated for the current practical needs of the institute; on the other hand, they also seem underused at the same time. After a conversation with the Curia and with the administration of the school, it was possible to find the real needs and the new demands of the community in order to redefine the available spaces. Since Bellinzago Lombardo’s population is predominantly constituted by elderly people, who are now devoid of a site in which they can meet and stay together, it was decided to provide a site, specifically intended for the aggregation of the elderly, within the project area; the goal is to promote the generation of profitable moments of aggregation and intergenerational exchange, taking advantage of the proximity of the kindergarten. Once the goals of the project had been established, it was possible to proceed with the study and the research on site, in order to completely understand the potential, the critical issues and the complexity of the architectonical artifact. Particular attention was paid, in the making of the project, to the so-called architectural barriers, making the accessibility of the site one of the most important strengths of the project, in order to guarantee complete fruition of the spaces by every kind of user. In conclusion, the project provides an intervention strategy that springs directly from real needs of the community, and that fits in the contest improving its quality and, at the same time, maintaining the possibility for future developments of other projects.

La tesi definisce una strategia di intervento volta a valorizzare e ridefinire gli spazi di pertinenza dell’asilo e dell’oratorio San Michele Arcangelo di Bellinzago Lombardo (MI). Durante l’iter progettuale è stata posta particolare enfasi sull’adeguamento di questi spazi alle nuove esigenze della collettività, scaturite da un lato dalla situazione post-pandemica, e d’altro canto dai cambiamenti demografico-sociali in atto all’interno della provincia e del territorio comunale. La sospensione delle attività didattiche dell’asilo causata dallo scoppio della pandemia ha generato la necessità di adeguare gli spazi scolastici alle nuove normative, obbligando ad una revisione degli stessi e dell’offerta didattica. Tutto ciò ha portato a ragionare con un’attenzione maggiore sulle potenzialità offerte dall’area, e quindi ad un recupero e rilancio generale non solo dell’edificio ospitante l’asilo, ma estendendosi anche alle pertinenze circostanti, con l’obiettivo di aumentare la partecipazione della collettività e migliorare l’offerta formativa dell’asilo. L’impulso generatore per il miglioramento della coesione sociale all’interno della comunità si è quindi concretizzato nella rigenerazione di un vecchio orto, di proprietà della casa parrocchiale, facilmente raggiungibile dall’asilo e quindi trasformabile in un orto didattico; la realizzazione di quest’ultimo ha coinvolto parte degli abitanti di Bellinzago, offertisi volontari, e ha portato i cittadini a riscoprire l’importanza, per la propria comunità, degli edifici e degli spazi dell’oratorio. L’interesse e la vivacità generati da questo primo intervento hanno creato quindi i presupposti per lo sviluppo della tesi. Attualmente, gli spazi dell’asilo e dell’oratorio risultano da un lato sovradimensionati per le funzioni e il numero di bambini iscritti all’istituto, e al contempo in gran parte sottoutilizzati; a partire da un dialogo con la Curia e con la dirigenza scolastica dell’asilo, sono andate quindi a definirsi le necessità reali e le funzioni da collocare all’interno degli spazi a disposizione, in modo da riformularli per poter accogliere nuovi momenti di aggregazione non solo per i bambini iscritti all’asilo, ma anche per la comunità intera. Dal momento che la popolazione di Bellinzago Lombardo è prevalentemente costituita da persone in età avanzata, le quali sono al momento sprovviste di luoghi di incontro, si è deciso di prevedere all’interno dell’area di progetto un luogo a loro disposizione, in modo da generare, anche grazie alla vicinanza con l’asilo, proficui momenti di scambio intergenerazionale. Una volta stabiliti gli obbiettivi del progetto, si è passati materialmente allo studio e all’indagine sul campo dello stato di fatto, andando a comprendere così nel dettaglio le potenzialità, le criticità e le complessità del manufatto architettonico in esame. Nel corso dello sviluppo del progetto è stata inoltre posta particolare attenzione nei confronti delle problematiche relative alle barriere architettoniche e all’accessibilità dell’edificio, garantendo quindi spazi fruibili da qualsiasi tipo di utenza. In conclusione, il progetto fornisce una strategia di intervento che poggia le proprie basi su esigenze reali della comunità, e che si inserisce all’interno dello stato di fatto dialogando con esso, migliorandolo e al contempo mantenendo la possibilità, per il futuro, di ulteriori sviluppi progettuali.
