This thesis work presents the importance of materials’ trajectories for design and engineering, for the industry and for the future. A study of the state of the art is presented with a semiotic analysis of two bio-fabricated materials: silk and mycelium composite. The composition of the trajectories of these materials is explained and analyzed, followed by the discussion of contradictions and transitions, thanks to the comparisons of their characteristics and the presentation of case studies. The analysis shows some aspects of the trajectories not being followed and many contrasts in these “natural” processes, particularly the Life vs. Death conflict. Afterwards, as designers we need to work to rebalance the relationship with our planet and reshape society for better, integrating design and ecology as a practice for the future.

Abstract
This thesis work presents the importance of materials’ trajectories for design and engineering, for the industry and for the future. A study of the state of the art is presented with a semiotic analysis of two bio-fabricated materials: silk and mycelium composite. The composition of the trajectories of these materials is explained and analyzed, followed by the discussion of contradictions and transitions, thanks to the comparisons of their characteristics and the presentation of case studies. The analysis shows some aspects of the trajectories not being followed and many contrasts in these “natural” processes, particularly the Life vs. Death conflict. Afterwards, as designers we need to work to rebalance the relationship with our planet and reshape society for better, integrating design and ecology as a practice for the future.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
