How to describe in a nutshell the main and ultimate goal of this thesis? In this research the presence of railways in cities and the inevitable consequences they bring to urban area has been critically rethought through the lens of architecture. Railway primarily is considered a mobility infrastructure and one of the most significant part of transportation system in modern cities. Nevertheless, their form and function is fundamentally based on technical codes for trains and mobility system. This coupled with essential constructive codes, make railways a series of generic objects bearing the same look all over the world. Therefore, irrespective of the urban area they are located, the spatial issues created by railways tend to fall into the same categories of problems. The role of railways in modern cities as the primary focus of this research is analyzed from an architectural perspective to find the most effective solution toward this phenomena. To tackle this problem it is necessary defining a framework by which the thesis can be based on. Hence railway in east-side Milan has been chosen as the primary case study for a twofold reason: First, the railway has significantly shaped urban development of urban Milan. Second, this railway in shape of an embankment performs as an urban barrier dividing most parts of the city. Its strong and concrete presence as a significant urban object in the urban fabric of Milan and the spatial issues it creates in surroundings spaces is the driving force of this thesis. Railway in East-Side Milan is conceived as an example to understand this problem in a more efficient manner. Hence it is subjected to a series of analysis that identify its issues and discover its potential factors. The primary historical and cartographical analysis followed by a careful formal and spatial close-reading of the railway conducted in the first and second chapter states that railway embankment in east-side Milan is an urban barrier devoid of any architectural principle. Subsequently in the third chapter, the inevitable problem of typology for railway infrastructure is discussed to the full through different architectural standpoints. These critical-readings followed by a careful study of different projects dealing with similar issues paves the ground for the ultimate chapter of this thesis. In the final and ultimate chapter entitled "application" all the previous studies and theories converge to envision an alternative reality for the railway. These accompanied with a deep study on the problem of typology in architecture combined with the most important aspects of mobility create a basis by which a meta project is envisioned. This project which is conceived in a conceptual site creates the basis for the final chapter of this thesis. In this proposal all the theories and hypothesis discussed in the initial chapters have been realized in two different zones of east-side Milan to understand how the new proposed typology is able to transform the real situation of the railway in a city like Milan.
Come descrivere in poche parole l'obiettivo principale e ultimo di questa tesi? In questa ricerca la presenza delle ferrovie nelle città e le inevitabili conseguenze che portano sull'area urbana è stata ripensata criticamente attraverso la lente dell'architettura. La ferrovia è principalmente considerata un'infrastruttura di mobilità e una delle parti più significative del sistema di trasporto nelle città moderne. Tuttavia, la loro forma e funzione si basa fondamentalmente su codici tecnici per i treni e il sistema di mobilità. Questo, unito a codici costruttivi essenziali, fanno delle ferrovie una serie di oggetti generici con lo stesso aspetto in tutto il mondo. Pertanto, indipendentemente dall'area urbana in cui si trovano, le questioni spaziali create dalle ferrovie tendono a rientrare nelle stesse categorie di problemi. Il ruolo delle ferrovie nelle città moderne come obiettivo primario di questa ricerca viene analizzato da una prospettiva architettonica per trovare la soluzione più efficace a questo fenomeno. Per affrontare questo problema è necessario definire un quadro su cui basare la tesi. Quindi la ferrovia nella zona est di Milano è stata scelta come caso di studio principale per un duplice motivo: in primo luogo, la ferrovia ha plasmato in modo significativo lo sviluppo urbano della Milano urbana. In secondo luogo, questa ferrovia a forma di terrapieno funge da barriera urbana che divide la maggior parte della città. La sua forte e concreta presenza come oggetto urbano significativo nel tessuto urbano di Milano e le problematiche spaziali che crea negli spazi circostanti è il motore di questa tesi. La ferrovia in East-Side Milano è concepita come un esempio per comprendere questo problema in modo più efficiente. Quindi è sottoposto a una serie di analisi che ne individuano i problemi e ne scoprono i potenziali fattori. L'analisi storica e cartografica primaria seguita da un'attenta lettura formale e spaziale della ferrovia condotta nel primo e nel secondo capitolo afferma che il rilevato ferroviario del lato est di Milano è una barriera urbana priva di qualsiasi principio architettonico. Successivamente, nel terzo capitolo, l'inevitabile problema della tipologia dell'infrastruttura ferroviaria viene affrontato a fondo attraverso diversi punti di vista architettonici. Queste letture critiche, seguite da un attento studio di diversi progetti che affrontano questioni simili, preparano il terreno per il capitolo finale di questa tesi. Nell'ultimo e ultimo capitolo intitolato "applicazione" convergono tutti gli studi e le teorie precedenti per immaginare una realtà alternativa per la ferrovia. Questi, accompagnati da uno studio approfondito sul problema della tipologia in architettura, combinato con gli aspetti più importanti della mobilità, creano le basi su cui si immagina un meta progetto. Questo progetto, concepito in un luogo concettuale, crea le basi per il capitolo finale di questa tesi. In questa proposta tutte le teorie e le ipotesi discusse nei capitoli iniziali sono state realizzate in due diverse zone della Milano est per capire come la nuova tipologia proposta sia in grado di trasformare la reale situazione della ferrovia in una città come Milano.
