Abitare il mare

The sea has always been a source of life. It is the place where the first single-celled organism developed, which then led to the progressive evolution of living species. It is a source of sustenance, a means of communication, it gives us oxygen, regulates the earth's climate and has beneficial effects on man's physical and mental health. I therefore decided to investigate the way in which man relates to the sea in terms of habitability. As we know nowadays our great ocean is in danger, as well as our cities and homes. The now inevitable rise of the waters will lead some areas of the world to disappear below sea level already by 2050. It is therefore time to take action and find solutions not only to safeguard the sea, but also to devise new ways of living. Through a series of case studies, I have analyzed private and public architectures that place the sea at the center of the project, starting inland and moving closer and closer to the sea surface, up to the creation of underwater structures. Some architects have faced the sea, building structures that, even though they are not on the shore, prefer to look at the seascape, ideally breaking the boundaries between inside and outside. On the other hand, there is architecture on the seashore, involving the renovation of abandoned buildings once dedicated to fishing and navigation and the redevelopment of city waterfronts. We then arrive at the sea surface with a series of case studies of floating structures, designed to move following the dreamy movement of the waves, and emerged structures, anchored to the sea floor, which bring us back to the image of primordial pile-dwellings. Finally, we will have the opportunity to dive into the depths of the sea and discover that everything is possible, from the creation of research structures to restaurants and artistic installations that aim to restore the coral reef and surprise snorkeling lovers. In all this analysis cannot miss the projects remained at the stage of concept, exercises in creativity that can open the mind to future solutions that sometimes seem utopian. From this analysis develops the traveling event "Living the Future - Change with the Ocean", which has the primary purpose of giving voice and space to the creativity and thoughts of each individual, highlighting how today everyone can make a difference. This is an installation that takes up the ancient maritime tradition of messages in bottles and aims to develop creativity, a sense of community and education on the sea. At the heart of the project is the question "How will we live in 2100?", an opportunity for everyone, children and adults alike, to dream up innovative and dreamlike solutions that can promote future habitability. To be part of the project you don't need to be an artist, architect or designer, everyone can close their eyes and imagine future scenarios to be drawn or described in words, leaving their own message that will be projected inside the bottle.

Il mare è da sempre fonte di vita. È il luogo dove si è sviluppato il primo organismo unicellulare, che ha portato poi alla progressiva evoluzione delle specie viventi. È fonte di sostentamento, mezzo di comunicazione, ci dona ossigeno, regola il clima terrestre ed ha effetti benefici sulla salute fisica e psichica dell’uomo. Ho deciso quindi di indagare il modo in cui l’uomo si rapporta al mare in termini di abitabilità. Come sappiamo al giorno d’oggi il nostro grande oceano è in pericolo, così come le nostre città e le case. L’ormai inevitabile innalzamento delle acque porterà alcune zone del mondo a scomparire al di sotto del livello del mare già entro il 2050. È quindi il momento di attivarsi e trovare soluzioni non solo per salvaguardare il mare, ma anche per ideare nuovi modi di abitare. Tramite una serie di casi studio ho analizzato architetture, private e pubbliche, che pongono al centro del progetto il mare, partendo dall’entroterra avvicinandosi sempre di più alla superficie marina, fino alla realizzazione di strutture sommerse. Alcuni architetti si sono affacciati al mare, costruendo strutture che, pur non essendo sulla riva, prediligono uno sguardo sul panorama marino, rompendo idealmente i confini tra interno e esterno. Ci sono invece architetture sulla riva del mare, che coinvolgono ristrutturazioni di edifici abbandonati una volta dedicati alla pesca e alla navigazione e riqualificazioni di waterfront cittadini. Si arriva poi sulla superficie marina con una serie di casi studio di strutture flottanti, destinate a muoversi seguendo il sognante movimento delle onde, e strutture emerse, ancorate sul fondo del mare, che ci riportano all’immagine delle palafitte primordiali. Infine, avremo l’occasione di immergerci nelle profondità marine e scoprire che tutto è possibile, dalla realizzazione di strutture di ricerca a ristoranti ed installazioni artistiche che mirano a risanare la barriera corallina e a sorprendere gli amanti dello snorkeling. In tutta questa analisi non possono mancare i progetti rimasti allo stadio di concept, esercizi di creatività che possono aprire la mente a soluzioni future che talvolta appaiono utopistiche. Da questa analisi si sviluppa l’evento itinerante “Living the Future – Change with the Ocean”, che ha lo scopo primario di dar voce e spazio alla creatività e ai pensieri di ogni individuo, evidenziando come oggi tutti possano fare la differenza. Si tratta di un’installazione che riprende l’antica tradizione marinara dei messaggi in bottiglia e che vuole sviluppare la creatività, il senso di collettività e l’educazione al mare. Al centro del progetto si trova la domanda “Come abiteremo nel 2100?”, un’occasione per tutti, bambini e adulti, per sognare soluzioni innovative e oniriche che possano promuovere l’abitabilità futura. Per far parte del progetto non serve essere artisti, architetti o designer, tutti possono chiudere gli occhi e immaginare scenari futuri da disegnare o da descrivere a parole, lasciando il proprio messaggio che verrà proiettato all’interno della bottiglia.
