Lendhafen Klagenfurt, Carinthia, Austria When approaching Klagenfurt’s city centre, on the way from the lake ‘Wörthersee’ you will be led by a linear channel constructed in the 16th century. The so called ‘Lendkanal’ was historically used as a matter of transportation of goods such as wood, iron or lead. After floating on ships, the goods were transferred to carriages at the end of the channel and further transported into different parts of the city and country. The small harbour that emerged in the area became a busy place and lively part of the city. This place of landing is the ‘Lendhafen’. Nowadays, the Lendhafen acts as a traffic hub between the busy city centre and the lake. A diverse ‚landing‘ of people can be seen, all heading there with different wishes and needs. Only years ago, the Lendhafen regained its popularity by hosting cultural events. There is the wish of the inhabitants to be able to use this quarter in an active way, but politics and financial unatainability have made it impossible. The surrounding atmosphere is morbid, with buildings in a bad shape or covered in plants. In this masterthesis the Lendhafen will be examined from its historical origin until its present use. The thesis focuses on an urban approach from which a design project will emerge. Currently, the Lendhafen is seen as an art and cultural centre for Klagenfurt. The proposed architectural project will maintain this function and encourage the surrounding to interact better with each other. With the transformation, the Lendhafen offers an infrastructure for the cultural and educational sector as well as a high-quality ‘landing place’ for residents and tourists, showcasing the historical layers of the city’s development up to the present time.

Lendhafen Klagenfurt, Austria La mia tesi di laurea riguarda il Lendhafen di Klagenfurt, un quartiere situato nei pressi dell’antica cinta muraria che un tempo circondava la città. Tratto caratteristico di questo luogo è il Lendkanal, un corso d’acqua che si estende da quest’area sino al Wörthersee, il lago più grande della Carinzia. Un tempo esso costituiva la più importante via di trasporto per la città; ad oggi invece il Lendkanal è divenuto di spazio ricreativo che ha come fruitori gli abitanti di Klagenfurt. Il quartiere, in passato molto animato, era soprattutto conosciuto per il trasporto di legname e ferro. Nei vicoli adiacenti era possibile trovare un panificio, e le piccole abitazioni dei lavoratori portuali. Negli ultimi anni questo sito ha guadagnato popolarità e notorietà, divenendo luogo prediletto per eventi culturali e di intrattenimento. Ciò a portato a porsi ulteriori considerazioni sul suo sviluppo futuro. Infatti, ad eccezione di alcuni angoli, il Lendhafen è in uno stato di abbandono; ciononostante esso conserva un carattere quasi dolce e contemporaneamente suggestivo. Il primo capitolo fornisce un quadro storico dello sviluppo del quartiere, mentre il secondo si occupa del contesto urbano con un’analisi approfondita dell’attuale situazione. In questa parte vengono elaborate proposte riguardanti le diverse aree del Lendhafen, le quali fungeranno da base per l’evoluzione del progetto architettonico. Sull’edificio centrale denominato Ratschtresl Hof viene dunque fatto un rilievo più approfondito, che porta in fase successiva ad un adattamento di diversi spazi al contesto ed al suo restauro. Grazie a questo intervento, il quartiere Lendhafen può usufruire di un nuovo centro che offre spazi ed infrastrutture per il settore culturale ed educativo, che crea degli spazi urbani di grande qualità sia per cittadini che per eventuali turisti, e che rende leggibili e tangibili le fasi storiche dello sviluppo della città fino al momento presente.
