Why is it important to play sports? Why is there a need to combine an academic career with a healthy sporting practice in contemporary times? What role does sport play in the formation of the student-person in the present and future? But above all, how do architecture, planning and public space respond and/or could respond to this need? These are the question marks that have guided us in the writing of this paper. The research does not want to have the presumption to provide answers and practical solutions, rather it wants to raise questions and highlight certain issues often considered secondary, demonstrating concretely what is the current situation and what strengths and weaknesses it presents. The analysis illustrated in the following pages investigates the relationship between university residences, spaces for sports practice and the student population in the Milan area. Milan is a city with a strong university character, and students rightfully belong to the category of city users in the Milanese capital. Contextually, the use of sports facilities is structured as an essential component in the urban development of the city and social development of the person. The elaboration is developed in three macro-areas. The first step is based on an investigation aimed at deepening the issues concerning the importance of sports practice for the formation of the human being. Through a chronology of the sport phenomenon in the various epochs, we reach the modern-contemporary age, characterized by the birth of the pedagogy of sport. For the first time, sport is configured as a science that can embrace and interface with all disciplines. Through the themes of mens-sana in corpore sano (healthy mind in a healthy body), of inclusion, of play and movement, it is possible to outline a picture of the sport situation, closely linked and connected to the individual and collective sphere of man. This connection was finally investigated in relation to the student world. By analyzing some scientific studies regarding the correlation between the university world and the world of sports, it has emerged how the two categories are more interconnected than ever and how the correct interpretation of the latter generates positive influences on the former. Moving on to the positive nature of interventions of urban regeneration and redevelopment under the banner of sport, we come to the second step of the research. The second phase concerns the mapping of university residences in the Milan area, with a reading key aimed at the sporting environment. The desire is to give a general picture of the current situation regarding equipment, facilities and sports spaces (owned or not) of the student residences. The analysis has therefore produced four comparative categories, capable of restoring order and measure to residential systems. Specifically, we focused on investigating the presence of green and/or athletic spaces within a fifteen-minute walk of the residence hall. The unit of measurement was adopted on the basis of the concept of proximity, (promoted for the first time by the mayor of Paris) and on some scientific studies of the WHO that empirically demonstrate how the minimum sports practice that each person should do daily is comparable to a walk of about thirty minutes in the path home-office, office-home. The research was supported by investigations previously carried out in the architectural field by organizations such as the Center for Active Design and Fitwell. The result then determines different degrees of criticality and potential for each student housing system. The need to understand the practice of sports as a catalyst for new urban opportunities and not, acquires greater value if accompanied by a population that shapes and molds urban places according to their needs and their needs. From this point of view, the spaces intended for sports are configured as places that promote inclusion at different scales, connecting local actors with the student population. Do we need to think about new places for sociality? How does caring for the individual contribute to his or her formation, leading to personal growth? Does the university need to establish itself as an institution capable of recognizing the different aspects that contribute to the transition from adolescent to adult? Despite the fact that overseas there is constant attention to the idea of sport business, is this really what the Italian system, with its rules and structures, should aspire to? For the past two years, the entire planet has been facing a chapter that is considered one of the darkest in human history. The need to react, get up and take back our new daily life is more urgent than ever. There is no need to return to normality, but rather to find a new balance. To put it in other terms: "The future is an invisible playground (?)".
Per dirlo in altri termini: “The future is an invisible playground (?)”.
