What makes a city healthy and how can we encourage sustainable practices? How can we best exploit and protect our existing environment? The capital of Bulgaria, Sofia, is a city with remarkable natural resources that have been neglected, undermined, and left to decay in the last few decades. Political turmoil, economic priorities and a major shift in the public psyche have shaped a city, lacking vital elements of its urban design. Construction and expansion are in their peak, leaving cityscapes dull and segregated with no regard of inclusivity and health. Southern parts of the city are planned for densification and now is the urgent time to think of good design solutions to be incorporated in the upcoming years. The biggest treasures of Sofia are its water and its topography. Vitosha mountain is a few kilometres away and offers a great range of recreational, educational, sports and tourist activities in the backyard of the capital. Due to the car dependent tendency in cities, soft mobility options to move through the city and to the mountain are not present. This creates grand problems n the natural environment daily. Harmful effects are also evident in the public’s health and wellbeing, so a solution must be found. The project investigates on macro, meso and micro scales to ensure coherence and transcendence of ideas to a single design solution. Using data from the municipal agency forurban research, Sofiaplan, a broad analysis is done to determine tendencies in expansion, physical characteristics, functionality, and infrastructure on the wider area of Sofia and Vitosha. A meso strategy defines the major design themes to be implemented and addressed. Then a micro analysis on the South Lozenets area is made to conclude an approach to the specific urban design project that aims to fulfil the macro and meso strategic proposals. A set of case studies is developed to navigate the process in an appropriate direction. They are then translated to concrete physical solutions on site. As a result, a specific area is chosen based on the analysis to act as a catalyst of the sustainable practices in city life. The site is determined to be a vast green park by the active urban plan of Sofia but without any specific requirements for the architects. The design proposal aims to address all elements of the active urban plan, but to intertwine it with multi-layered sustainable practices to respond to the existing and future issues of the wider area. Landscaping, water network and mobility are key points in the project. The design project of a single park can fundamentally change its wider context functionality, quality of life and the environment’s health in a positive direction without grand changes to the urban morphology. The work should act as a catalyst for the conversation on how the public realm is managed in Sofia and to shift the focus to sustainable and inclusive cities. History shows numerous great examples of successful practices in the public interest, but in the last decades this number has greatly decreased. Times are good to raise questions and seek answers from the planning authorities on their methods and decisions.
Vengono poi tradotti in soluzioni fisiche concrete in loco.
