Businesses play important roles in community functioning, they are vital for societies providing not only services or products based on their needs, but also providing opportunities, progress and innovation enhancing the way people live. Likewise, they are key not only in creating solid employment rates, but also in achieving sustainable societies; nonetheless, the prerequisite of making environmentally conscious decision became a crucial issue for this sector. Businesses are the foundation of local, regional, and national economies and when affected by disasters, the impacts are significant on all type of business in both developed and developing countries. Both direct and indirect impacts of natural disasters are devastating to business activities and their continuity. Thus, improving preparedness of important sector as business and reducing risk of natural disasters is a crucial mandate. Aim of this research is to understand how business sector function, it’s interconnection with other sectors, its vulnerability and how to decrease negative consequences after a natural disaster hits it. This research uses information from previous open-source studies on Disaster Risk Reduction, and disaster impact on business sector. At first, the research on multi-disaster impact on business sector is studied and then the investigation on the losses occurred in Lorca (Spain) business due to 2011 earthquake, which includes shops, hotels/restaurants, service business and local industry, is performed. Different analyses have been conducted on the post-event data provided by the LODE project showcase. As a result, it was possible to identify different issues that current condition of business sector might encounter during and after a natural disaster, particularly after an earthquake, since our case study focuses on the Lorca Earthquake. Conclusively, the present work outlines that by improving resilience of businesses and increasing governments support to businesses it is possible to reduce losses. Consequently, some recommendations are provided in order to address the discussed gaps and issues. Key words: Earthquake, Disaster, Business sector, Impact.
Le imprese svolgono un ruolo importante nel funzionamento della comunità, sono vitali per le società che forniscono non solo servizi o prodotti in base alle loro esigenze, ma anche opportunità, progresso e innovazione che migliorano il modo di vivere delle persone. Allo stesso modo, sono fondamentali non solo per creare solidi tassi di occupazione, ma anche per realizzare società sostenibili; tuttavia, il presupposto per prendere una decisione rispettosa dell'ambiente è diventato una questione cruciale per questo settore. Le imprese sono alla base delle economie locali, regionali e nazionali e, quando colpite da disastri, gli impatti sono significativi su tutti i tipi di attività, sia nei paesi sviluppati che in quelli in via di sviluppo. Gli impatti sia diretti che indiretti dei disastri naturali sono devastanti per le attività commerciali e la loro continuità. Pertanto, migliorare la preparazione di un settore importante come attività commerciale e ridurre il rischio di disastri naturali è un mandato cruciale. Lo scopo di questa ricerca è capire come funziona il settore delle imprese, la sua interconnessione con altri settori, la sua vulnerabilità e come ridurre le conseguenze negative dopo che un disastro naturale lo colpisce. Questa ricerca utilizza le informazioni provenienti da precedenti studi open source sulla riduzione del rischio di catastrofi e sull'impatto del disastro sul settore aziendale. Dapprima viene studiata la ricerca sull'impatto multi-disastro sul settore delle imprese e poi viene svolta l'indagine sulle perdite verificate nell'attività di Lorca (Spagna) a causa del terremoto del 2011, che comprende negozi, hotel/ristoranti, attività di servizi e industria locale . Diverse analisi sono state condotte sui dati post-evento forniti dalla vetrina del progetto LODE. Di conseguenza, è stato possibile identificare diversi problemi che la condizione attuale del settore imprenditoriale potrebbe incontrare durante e dopo un disastro naturale, in particolare dopo un terremoto, poiché il nostro caso di studio si concentra sul terremoto di Lorca. In conclusione, il presente lavoro sottolinea che migliorando la resilienza delle imprese e aumentando il sostegno dei governi alle imprese è possibile ridurre le perdite. Di conseguenza, vengono fornite alcune raccomandazioni per affrontare le lacune e le questioni discusse. Parole chiave: Terremoto, Disastro, Settore di attività, Impatto.
