Submersion : experiences, pathways and environmental awareness in the Gregório Basin

The focus of this work is on the change of perception in relation to the invisible urban water bodies, in a perspective of ecological and ecosystem awareness, having as study place the Gregório Stream, in the municipality of São Carlos, in Brazil. To this end, the route through the valley bottoms is used as a tool, associated with the experiences of the submerged body in the territory. Without leaving aside the mitigation of the flooding caused by the river through possible landscape design interventions, the work reflects on the act of walking, which elucidates, demonstrates, provokes, promotes and immerses the body directly within the conflict. At the same time, the body is understood both as a reader and as a creator of the space it travels through. The premise, then, is that architecture as a pathway and experience instigates the use of human senses – touch, smell, taste, hearing and vision – and draws fluid spaces of movement, sociability, cognition, memory, party, game, encounter, and rituals. From here, it is expected that the appropriation of the spaces close to water bodies - as places of travel and appreciation - will result in the promotion of respect and appreciation of ecosystems, in the generation of awareness about the causes and consequences of the water-city conflict, and in reconnecting the community to its territory.

Il focus del lavoro è sul cambiamento della percezione in relazione ai corpi idrici urbani invisibili, in una prospettiva di consapevolezza ecologica ed ecosistemica, avendo come luogo di studio il torrente di Gregório, nel comune di São Carlos, in Brasile. A tal fine viene utilizzato come strumento il percorso di fondovalle, legato alle esperienze del corpo sommerso nel territorio. Senza tralasciare la mitigazione del problema degli allagamenti causati dal fiume attraverso possibili interventi di architettura del paesaggio, si riflette sull'atto del camminare, che chiarisce, dimostra, provoca, promuove e immerge il corpo direttamente nel conflitto. Il corpo è inteso sia come lettore sia come creatore dello spazio che attraversa. La premessa è quindi che l'architettura come percorso ed esperienza induce all'uso dei sensi umani – tatto, olfatto, gusto, udito e vista – e disegna spazi fluidi di movimento, socialità, cognizione, memoria, festa, gioco, incontro e rituali. Come conseguenza si prevede che l'appropriazione di spazi vicini ai corpi idrici - come luoghi di viaggio e di apprezzamento - si traduca nella promozione del rispetto e della valorizzazione degli ecosistemi, nella generazione di consapevolezza sulle cause e le conseguenze del conflitto acqua-città, riconnettendo la comunità al suo territorio.
