Polimi startup hub : "plug-in" as architecture and work style

To realize such a project, I wanted to introduce the concept of ‘Plug-in,’ which in architecture is a bundle that adds functionality to an application through some well-defined architecture for extensibility, allowing third-party developers to add functionality to an application without having access to the source code. However, this concept could also be adapted to the organization of these activities and the work style. In addition to the tremendous variety of functions and working environments, it has to host of specialists (another kind of ‘plug-ins’) from different professions, each of them will have a specialized character that will eventually be propagated among them. The thesis focuses on the “plug-in” concept in both architecture and work style, raising the question of how space and activity can influence each other, taking as reference the ideology formulated by Le Corbusier. It may be different people (live Plugs) entering the space and defining it according to their preferences, or a combination of building modules (dead Plugs) providing a suitable type of space for specific activities. Both cases can happen simultaneously, taking full advantage of the plug-in concept to achieve different fruits. All these investigations, of course, will have to be carried out according to the character of the project site, so all the functional, climatic, structural, and historical factors will also be research objectives.

Per realizzare un progetto di questo tipo, ho voluto introdurre il concetto di "Plug-in", che in architettura è un pacchetto che aggiunge funzionalità a un'applicazione attraverso un'architettura ben definita per l'estensibilità, consentendo a sviluppatori terzi di aggiungere funzionalità a un'applicazione senza avere accesso al codice sorgente. Tuttavia, questo concetto potrebbe essere adattato anche all'organizzazione di queste attività e allo stile di lavoro. Oltre all'enorme varietà di funzioni e ambienti di lavoro, deve ospitare specialisti (un altro tipo di "plug-in") di diverse professioni, ognuno dei quali avrà un carattere specializzato che alla fine si propagherà tra loro. La tesi si concentra sul concetto di "plug-in" sia nell'architettura che nello stile di lavoro, sollevando la questione di come lo spazio e l'attività possano influenzarsi a vicenda, prendendo come riferimento l'ideologia formulata da Le Corbusier. Può trattarsi di persone diverse (spine vive) che entrano nello spazio e lo definiscono in base alle loro preferenze, oppure di una combinazione di moduli edilizi (spine morte) che forniscono un tipo di spazio adatto a specifiche attività. Entrambi i casi possono verificarsi contemporaneamente, sfruttando appieno il concetto di plug-in per ottenere frutti diversi. Tutte queste indagini, naturalmente, dovranno essere condotte in base al carattere del sito di progetto, quindi tutti i fattori funzionali, climatici, strutturali e storici saranno anche obiettivi di ricerca.
