Abstract
The human being has always communicated through oral language. To pass on or delegate memory to sources external to one's mind was never an option except until the invention of writing and parallel reading that radically changed communication, placing itself among the most significant and revolutionary breakthroughs in the evolution of the human being. Reading, initially born as a pure transcription of orality, then evolved taking on a brand new dimension of internalization for the individual and thus allowing the development of skills such as empathy and critical thinking, which have defined and characterized what is our species today. But with these assumptions, it spontaneously arises to ask ourselves how reading is evolving concerning the digital technologies that are pervading every aspect of daily life. What is happening is a profound change in the way we understand information, and this enormously influences the previously acquired skills mentioned above, which are at compromising risk by the devices we use every day that cognitively accustom us to certain predispositions in how what and how much we read. This concern leads to the need for awareness and understanding of the role that the complex process of reading plays in people lives today, considering the different ways in which it takes place, how it is changing and what are the existing tools to support this activity. The scenarios were a fundamental tool to guide the exploration of the design possibilities for the orientation to solutions to personal and social needs and problems around the theme of augmented reading, which led to an in-depth focus on one of the directions that emerged. The answer given in terms of design was to create a new reading experience that preserves the immersive nature of the activity and integrates and exploits the values provided by the technology, as it has the ability to respond to current and emerging needs, but in a silent perspective, so as not to require non-fundamental attention from the reader, preserving the times dictated by the reading, but also of the book in its physical dimension, in a context where its relevance is still central both on a global and generational level. The product, therefore, assumes a mediating role between a need that is divided parallel to the need for disconnection and connection that is apparently paradoxical. The result, intending to define a new experiential dimension of reading, takes shape through a system that includes what is defined as the next wearable device to become part of our lives after the broad adoption of smartwatches, which are the smart glasses. This new emerging device is taking the stage in the design landscape and is at the center of various implementation attempts by companies and startups worldwide looking for the most suitable formula to find acceptance and significant utility by the public.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
