COCOON. Rooms for social Interaction and recreational infrastructure in Valtellina's Alpine region promoting Winter Olympics 2026

Today, the Olympic games play a key role in the city’s visual identity. Significant changes that occur during such huge events can entirely alter a city’s image, creating a great disparity between reality and representation. A new role is required in Olympic design and architecture to reconcile the city’s vision of actual reality with the reality that represents the city’s desired portrayal. The vision of the Valtellina area has evolved over time to support initiatives that improve local culture and traditions, connect mountain and urban communities, and build new, enduring links across mountain valleys. Introducing an intervention that supports these activities during an event such as the 2026 Winter Olympics would result in benefits that surpass all expectations for the area without potentially causing changes in the region’s before and after scenarios. The project intends to promote distinctive mountain-centered development strategies that represent the surrounding activities while prioritizing sustainability, preserving the region’s natural environment and cultural heritage. These approaches will benefit local mountain communities not just in terms of promoting the Games, but also in terms of strengthening fundamental services such as mobility, cultural and natural heritage representation, community development, and tourism. This thesis attempts to provide modular, infrastructural, and recreational spaces in 7 distinct rooms, truly reflecting the region and its character, framed around an active, family-friendly cycling route in the region. This approach will help with catering the attendees during, and after the event, with a bigger goal of promoting slow tourism for the mountain region.

Oggi i giochi olimpici giocano un ruolo chiave nell’identità visiva della città. I cambiamenti significativi che si verificano durante eventi così grandi possono alterare completamente l’immagine di una città, creando una grande disparità tra realtà e rappresentazione. È necessario un nuovo ruolo nel design e nell’architettura olimpici per conciliare la visione della città della realtà reale con la realtà che rappresenta la rappresentazione desiderata della città. La visione del territorio valtellinese si è evoluta nel tempo per sostenere iniziative che migliorano la cultura e le tradizioni locali, collegano le comunità montane e urbane e costruiscono nuovi e duraturi collegamenti tra le valli montane. L’introduzione di un intervento a sostegno di queste attività durante un evento come le Olimpiadi invernali del 2026 comporterebbe benefici che superano tutte le aspettative per l’area senza potenzialmente causare cambiamenti negli scenari prima e dopo della regione.. Il progetto intende promuovere strategie di sviluppo distintive incentrate sulla montagna che rappresentino le attività circostanti dando priorità alla sostenibilità, preservando l’ambiente naturale e il patrimonio culturale della regione. Questi approcci andranno a beneficio delle comunità montane locali non solo in termini di promozione dei Giochi, ma anche in termini di rafforzamento di servizi fondamentali come la mobilità, la rappresentazione del patrimonio culturale e naturale, lo sviluppo della comunità e il turismo. Questa tesi tenta di fornire spazi modulari, infrastrutturali e ricreativi in ​​7 stanze distinte, che riflettano veramente la regione e il suo carattere, incorniciate attorno a una pista ciclabile attiva e adatta alle famiglie nella regione.
