Water [rooms]. Manifesting urban rooms along the proposed reopening of the Navigli canal in Milano

The title “Water Rooms” suggests the very direct meaning to the whole theme of the design thesis. Water rooms are envisioned along the Reopening of the Navigli canal in the city of Milano which once linked the city to its waters. The significance of such natural and historical element of the city was buried under the new developments and urban transformations after the mid-20th Century.The vision to reopen this blue streak that runs through the city will create multiple opportunities in making of new public realms that will enhance the historic centre and give back the city’s lost identity. The design underlines the main themes of urban and interiority by creating urban rooms through inclusive design in relation to water with the city. We are constantly rewriting and rebuilding, the approach towards addressing the historical traces and sites of significance creates meaningful urban spaces. The revival of the canal will interact with the existing built environment, contributing in the realization of an urban void in need of intervention. The project starts by realising the Navigli system and the nodes of interventions where the canal will interact with the city in forming active urban rooms. These rooms inhibits distinctive urban atmosphere and each with different urban character. The design is a collective of such manifestation where the Water will act as the protagonist in creating Water rooms.

Il titolo “Water Rooms” suggerisce il significato molto diretto dell’intero tema della tesi progettuale. Le sale d’acqua sono previste lungo la Riapertura del Canale dei Navigli nella città di Milano che un tempo collegava la città alle sue acque. Il significato di tale elemento naturale e storico della città è stato sepolto sotto i nuovi sviluppi e le trasformazioni urbane dopo la metà del XX secolo. La visione di riaprire questa striscia blu che attraversa la città creerà molteplici opportunità nella creazione di nuovi regni pubblici che valorizzerà il centro storico e restituirà alla città l’identità perduta. Il progetto sottolinea i temi principali dell’urbanità e dell’interiorità creando ambienti urbani attraverso un design inclusivo in relazione all’acqua con la città. Stiamo costantemente riscrivendo e ricostruendo, l’approccio all’affrontare le tracce storiche e i siti significativi crea spazi urbani significativi. Il rilancio del canale interagirà con l’ambiente costruito esistente, contribuendo alla realizzazione di un vuoto urbano che necessita di interventi. Il progetto parte dalla realizzazione del sistema dei Navigli e dei nodi di intervento dove il canale interagirà con la città formando stanze urbane attive. Queste camere inibiscono l’atmosfera urbana distintiva e ognuna con un carattere urbano diverso. Il design è un collettivo di tale manifestazione in cui l’Acqua sarà la protagonista nella creazione delle stanze dell’Acqua.
