Over the years, Italian journalism and the entire ecosystem have transformed. The media have radi- cally evolved to distribute news to a new audience: the young generations accustomed to the pluralism of information. While digital platforms incentivize free and potentially endless access to news, they are also places of dis/misinformation that boost cognitive bias and community polarization leading to a decrease in trustworthiness. Against the identified contextual issues, the research maps quantitative metrics on strategic differences between news brands in the Italian marketplace through a data-driven design approach. The analysis also adopts a human-centred approach to collect qualitative insights into the young reader’s interests and new behavioural habits. The area of opportunity in Communication and Ser- vice design is outlined, which aims to improve access to information by analyzing fruition, visual presenta- tion and fact-checking. The thesis aims to enhance the usability of the journalism system to guide young readers toward high-quality information. The final output consists of the design of Ctrl N, a platform for reliable social news. The service works by aggregating information from Instagram through screening Italian news brands, fact-checking and re- distributing in different formats for young audiences.
Nel corso degli anni, il giornalismo italiano e l’intero ecosistema coinvolto si sono evoluti. I media si sono radicalmente evoluti per la distribuzione delle notizie verso un nuovo tipo di pubblico: le nuove generazioni abituate al pluralismo di informazione. Se da un lato le nuove piattaforme incentivano un accesso libero e potenzialmente infinito alle news, dall’altro sono luoghi di dis/misinformazione che fomentano bias cognitivi e polarizzazione delle community. A fronte delle problematiche di contesto individuate, la ricerca analizza metriche sulle differenze strategi- che tra news brands nel market place italiano attra- verso approccio design data driven e mappa insights qualitativi su interessi e nuove abitudini comporta- mentali del segmento di giovani lettori attraverso un approccio human centred. É stata delineata l’area di opportunità e progettazione nel settore del Communication e Service design, atto a migliorare l’accessibilità all’informazione, analizzan- done fattori quali la navigazione, la presentazione vi- suale e fact-check. L’intento della mia tesi è di miglio- rare la fruizione del sistema giornalistico per orientare i giovani lettori verso un’informazione di qualità. L’output finale consiste nella progettazione di Ctrl N, una piattaforma per la ricerca di news social verifi- cate. L’aggregatore guida alla consultazione di news raccolte da Instagram attraverso un processo di screening preliminare dei news brands italiani, fact- checking e ridistribuzione in diversi formati rivolti al giovane pubblico.
