The taxonomy of case studies that concludes this research sheds light on visual patterns and aesthetic canons, using the layout and the guide tool as a key to understanding the contemporary.

Abstract
This discussion moves from analysing the grid tool, in its history and evolution, to an analysis of its daily application. The ultimate aim is to understand the logic that can subsequently be applied and re-used by the designer of the new millennium, who increasingly has to deal with a 'fluid' design that ranges between paper and digital or a hybrid 'in the balance' between these two types of solutions. In order to better investigate the contemporary scenario related to the approach and use of the layout grid, through a systematic and accurate analysis of the contemporary aesthetic canons related to independent publishing, as it represents the emblem of visual expressive freedom and content. Independent magazines offer the ideal field of action for the emergence of significant links, trends and attitudes. In order to approach a taxonomy of the most emblematic cases, we intend to start from a series of stimuli that allow a 360° reading of the phenomenon. What is the grid? What is the meaning of the grid? What importance and function does it have within design? The starting point is an in-depth study of the grid from a historical, technical and theoretical point of view, in order to learn the compositional principles through which the selected complex artefacts can be analysed. Secondly, the magazine will be the object of learning, first through a historical profile, and then by approaching the context of the independent magazine, its market logics and how they differentiate it from mainstream publishing, with the aim of bringing out the peculiarities of this field of investigation and how it is in constant ferment despite the advent of digital. The taxonomy of case studies that concludes this research sheds light on visual patterns and aesthetic canons, using the layout and the guide tool as a key to understanding the contemporary.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
