The ARC - (Agriculture, Research, Culture project sets up a new technological pole in the municipality of Verrès, in the former Balzano industrial complex, located in the initial stretch of the Valdostan lower valley and served by infrastructures such as the motorway and railway. The Pole is part of a broader strategy for the care and recovery of the Lower Valley territory, through the revision of the cycle path suggested by SNAI, which is develops along the course of the Dora Baltea river, intercepting the municipalities of the valley floor and highlighting the local cultural heritage. ARC will be the hub of this cycle path and the gateway to town of Verrès, welcoming users and guiding them through the new spaces to the historic centre and places of cultural interest. The agricultural sector has been identified as a direct means of intervening and protecting the territory by creating a series of support services for companies and private individuals: the catalyst for all these activities will be the inclusion of a Vertical Farm located in one of the buildings that will be conserved, flanked by spaces for research and open to the public. Respecting the local agricultural reality, Vertical Farm does not impose itself as a substitute, but stands alongside agricultural traditions to fill the gaps in production and the problems of the area; the aim is to start a pilot project that can be replicated both on a large scale (in other abandoned industrial areas) and on a small scale (private individuals and companies). This new reality is subdivided into a part dedicated to production for the economic self-sustenance of the pole and one aimed at research, support of farmers in Valle d'Aosta and education for the new generations. The new pole will become a reference point open to citizens, local business, researchers and tourists: specialised laboratories, training spaces and research areas will be a springboard for many young people in the area and their business, but also a support point for companies already established in the region. The first project actions are directed to the reuse of two formerly productive buildings, through the emptying and insertion of structure-independent volumes. The future space dedicated to the market foresees the insertion of small volumes made of x-lam, modular in different configurations; the building dedicated to Vertical Farm, on the other hand, sees the positioning of individual volumes that will house the different production phases. In addition to the re-use of some of the pre-existing buildings, the project includes the construction of a new building, typologically referable to a plate, under which open and closed spaces follow one another, guiding the user through contraction and expansion of the spaces and an alternation of light and shadow. The idea of generating a visual continuity between the park and the new building will be realised through the design of a green roof, which will extend over almost the entire roof. In the initial part of the area, towards the entrance from the railway station, a series of public spaces will be located, such as educational laboratories, workshops for carpentry, mechanics, electronics, exhibition spaces, conference rooms and a market that can be converted into an event space. The new building, which manifests itself as a podium to enhance the existing artefacts, reinforces its monolithic identity through the use of materials, such as concrete, and the architectural strategy of the continuous wall, which articulates and becomes load-bearing in all its parts.
