Thinking back to 'growth is the only testimony to life', the famous motto of the English philosopher John Henry Newman, we certainly think of physical growth, that of a child becoming a man with the passage of time. However, we must not stop at the first thought and, digging into this statement, we can reflect a secondary meaning of the phrase, a less physical and more intellectual meaning, a meaning that is more about the person and his moral growth than the mere sign of age. In this dissertation we will focus on the rebirth of a prison inmate who, realising that he had made mistakes in his previous life as a free citizen, decides to redeem himself by embarking on a path of social rehabilitation through work in a carpentry workshop. Before getting to the crux of the matter, i.e. the project itself, it is necessary to take a journey through prison history and theory, studying the most important laws and reforms, interviewing those involved and physically and virtually visiting places of interest. In doing so, we are ready to move slightly away from the field of jurisprudence and embrace the world of design and planning. The intersection of these fields creates a hybrid reality of prison carpentry called Galegno, a play on words between its location, the 'galley', and the key material of the business, wood. The aim of Galegno is not so much to have a functioning production chain so as to earn a lot of money, but rather the main purpose is to teach the inmate carpenter a mastery and make him realise that it is possible to think of a future outside of illegality, outside of recidivism, outside of prison. Through the carpentry activity, a secondary objective is achieved, namely to create cooperation between the inmates throughout the production phase, creating a work situation similar to that found in a self-employed business. Galegno is only the initial process in the rehabilitation process, which must end with the inmate leaving the prison to work outside the prison, employed by a company as a carpenter. This allows for greater integration of the prisoner, a complete evaluation of the results of the rehabilitation process and the possibility of having a work contract upon release.

Abstract
This allows for greater integration of the prisoner, a complete evaluation of the results of the rehabilitation process and the possibility of having a work contract upon release.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
