The Silk Roads were a place of extensive cultural interaction that aided in the spread of the many cultures that spanned its expansive network. The Silk Routes, owing to its great expanse across Europe and Asia, were home to many of the world’s oldest and richest cultures - The Greek and Roman in Europe, Persian and Islamic in Central Asia, and Chinese and Indian in Asia. These cultures and their various religions such as Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism, helped shape the art and architecture of the Silk Roads. The evidence of this influence of the cultural exchange, while not obvious, is seen in the architecture of the different regions of the Silk Routes, such as the presence of Hellenistic elements in Parthian Persia, and later Sasanian styles in Indian Buddhist and Hindu architecture. For the purpose of this master thesis, the focus is on the influence of the Asian territories - namely those of Persian, Chinese and Indian, along the Silk Route and the effect of their varied cultures and their architectural styles on each other, from its commencement in the 2nd century BCE until the arrival of Islam to the regions in the 7th century CE. There are numerous examples of said cultural mixture in the Silk Roads post Islamisation, however, there are also some instances of various links between pre-Islamic Persia, India and China since antiquity with several similarities in the architectural elements, planning concepts and ideas of cosmology amongst the three cultures. The scope of this thesis, therefore, is on the architectural styles of Persia, India and China from the commencement of the ‘Silk Roads’ around the 2nd century BCE until the diffusion of Islam along the Silk Roads around 7th century CE.

Abstract
The scope of this thesis, therefore, is on the architectural styles of Persia, India and China from the commencement of the ‘Silk Roads’ around the 2nd century BCE until the diffusion of Islam along the Silk Roads around 7th century CE.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
