In the complexity of contemporary society, social innovation is spreading and its potential, as a driver of sustainable change, is increasing. To facilitate this process, the design community, in general, and design schools, in particular, are playing a pivotal role as Agents of Change (Manzini, 2012). Starting from the role that PoliMi DESIS Lab is playing in the Milanese context as an important promoter of sustainable change, this thesis aims to investigate how Design-oriented University Research Labs are orienting their activities and what difficulties and challenges they are facing. In doing this, the main result is a theoretical framework of knowledge on Academic Social Innovation Research Lab which seeks to push the boundaries of how we think about this reality, understanding it as a practice in the making, a space of contrasts, and as a politics in and of itself. Finally, this thesis’s most ambitious aim is to provide the design bases of a process and toolkit to support laboratories in co-envision new directions of their research activity and in this way, fostering and preserving their dynamic, responsive, and fluid identity which reflects the complexities of the XXI century and helps research labs to rapidly evolve in response to shifting contexts.
Nella complessità della società contemporanea, l’innovazione sociale si sta diffondendo e il suo potenziale, come motore del cambiamento sostenibile, sta aumentando. Per facilitare questo processo la comunità del design, in generale, e le scuole di design, in particolare, stanno svolgendo un ruolo centrale come Agenti del Cambiamento (Manzini, 2012). Partendo dal ruolo che il PoliMi DESIS Lab sta svolgendo nel contesto milanese come importante promotore del cambiamento sostenibile, questa tesi si propone di indagare come i laboratori di ricerca universitari guidati dal design stiano orientando la loro attività e quali difficoltà e sfide stiano affrontando. Il risultato principale è un quadro di conoscenze sui Laboratori di Ricerca Accademici per l’Innovazione Sociale che cerca di allargarne i confini teorici, intendendoli come una pratica in divenire, uno spazio di contrasti e una politica in sé. Infine, la tesi ambisce a fornire le basi progettuali di un processo partecipativo e un kit di strumenti, di supporto ai laboratori nella co-visione delle nuove direzioni percorribili dalla propria attività di ricerca; preservando, in questo modo, la propria identità dinamica, reattiva e fluida che riflette le complessità del XXI secolo e li aiuta ad evolversi rapidamente, in risposta ai contesti mutevoli.
