The advancement of technology has surely provided us with numerous benefits over the years. Our lives have become faster, more efficient, cheaper, and perhaps even more attractive despite technology. tools of technology facilitate the communication between people regardless of geographical location. Also, the expansion of social networks has accelerated the transfer of information to an unbelievable rate and raised people’s awareness all over the world. However, sometimes we forget how many physical meetings, face-to-face conversations, warm hugs, and our friends have faded. How much less do we know about the people who live around us? How much more so on subways, buses, and public places are people drowning in their phone screens and looking in the virtual world for what is right next to them in the real world!? Studies show that the excessive use, has brought numerous problems. According to research, improper use of digital tools and excessive social network activity can dramatically increase our risk of mental disease, including depression and isolation. Statics show that teenagers and young adults are at a higher risk of having these mental health problems than other age groups. On the other hand, Covid-19 condition has now doubled the issues in this field! People all around the world are now forced to have no social connection, not by choice, but by compulsion. Only 6 months after the pandemic period, symptoms of depression, isolation, stress, decision-making disorders and other diseases have escalated drastically to frightening levels. Across all age categories, again adolescents and young adults have the most concerning numbers. We acquire the skill of communicating with others in the community more than anywhere else in schools, playgrounds, co-living places, and with our peers. A skill that is essential to human life in adulthood. A skill that teaches us social life. How to make friends, how to make distinctions between right and wrong, how to trust, how to cooperate, how to negotiate, and more importantly HOW TO LIVE. Starting from this context, the thesis’ objective is to meet the need of having social interaction in the society and its benefits on mental and physical health. with the focus on communal spaces in temporary accommodations. We attempted to present a proper and efficient approach of designing a communal space that has potential to motivate people to participate in social activities and to boost social connections. The search path starts with investigating the consequences of digital addiction and COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of people in society. The research also statistically identifies the mental illnesses that have become increasingly prevalent among people, particularly among youngsters, including depression, decision-making disorders, distractions, stress, and others. In the following, The thesis addresses the characteristics of a good common spaces in terms of social interaction, through research and as well as reviewing successful case studies in this area to build up a picture of a good communal space in temporary accommodation. The student dormitories are considered target places. These spaces can have the potential to be the best place for young adults to connect with others. Others that they do not already know just because of family or neighbourhood or other involuntary choices. Places where many individuals from all over the world are randomly brought together with different cultures, different languages, different backgrounds, and different ages. Not only the mentioned people, but also the people with whom we live in the same country and even in the same city, but we have not had the chance before to interact and socialize. The Isaac Newton residenza Milano (One of Politecnico di Milano dormitories) has selected as case to redesign its communal space. To better understand the needs of residents, a questionnaire was created and distributed. We made the project implementation path more practical and efficient by gathering more than 200 responses, knowing what kind of opinion the residents of these places have on public spaces. Additionally, the idea of creating an application with the objective of boosting internal community connection was also taken into consideration. so that residents can use it to organize an activity or take part in other activities. More than that, it makes it possible for residents to connect with one another more easily with mutual characteristics and preferences and to develop relationships. and many other features which are addressed in greater detail in the thesis.
Il progresso della tecnologia ci ha sicuramente fornito numerosi vantaggi nel corso degli anni. Le nostre vite sono diventate più veloci, più efficienti, più economiche e forse anche più attraenti nonostante la tecnologia. Gli strumenti tecnologici facilitano la comunicazione tra le persone indipendentemente dalla posizione geografica. Inoltre, l’espansione dei social network ha accelerato il trasferimento di informazioni a un ritmo incredibile e ha aumentato la consapevolezza delle persone in tutto il mondo. Tuttavia, a volte dimentichiamo quanti incontri fisici, conversazioni faccia a faccia, abbracci calorosi e i nostri amici sono svaniti. Quanto meno sappiamo delle persone che vivono intorno a noi? Quanto più su metropolitane, autobus e luoghi pubblici ci sono persone che annegano negli schermi dei loro telefoni e cercano nel mondo virtuale ciò che è proprio accanto a loro nel mondo reale!? Gli studi dimostrano che l’uso eccessivo della tecnologia, ha portato numerosi problemi. Secondo la ricerca, l’uso improprio degli strumenti digitali e l’eccessiva attività sui social network possono aumentare notevolmente il rischio di malattie mentali, inclusi depressione e isolamento. Le statistiche mostrano che adolescenti e giovani adulti corrono un rischio maggiore di avere questi problemi di salute mentale rispetto ad altri gruppi di età. D’altra parte, la condizione di Covid-19 ha ora raddoppiato le problematiche in questo campo! Le persone in tutto il mondo sono ora costrette a non avere alcuna connessione sociale, non per scelta, ma per compulsione. Solo 6 mesi dopo il periodo della pandemia, i sintomi di depressione, isolamento, stress, disturbi decisionali e altri disturbi sono aumentati drasticamente a livelli spaventosi. Tra tutte le categorie di età, ancora una volta adolescenti e giovani adulti hanno i numeri più preoccupanti. Acquisiamo l’abilità di comunicare con gli altri nella comunità più che altrove nelle: scuole, nei parchi giochi, nei luoghi di co-living e con i nostri coetanei. Un’abilità che è essenziale per la vita umana in età adulta. Una competenza che ci insegna la vita sociale. Come fare amicizia, come fare distinzioni tra giusto e sbagliato, come fidarsi, come cooperare, come negoziare e, soprattutto, COME VIVERE. Partendo da questo contesto, l’obiettivo della tesi è soddisfare il bisogno di avere interazione sociale nella società e i suoi benefici sulla salute mentale e fisica con particolare attenzione agli spazi comuni in alloggi temporanei. Abbiamo tentato di presentare un approccio adeguato ed efficiente alla progettazione di uno spazio comune che abbia il potenziale per motivare le persone a partecipare ad attività sociali e per aumentare le connessioni sociali. Il percorso di ricerca inizia con lo studio delle conseguenze della dipendenza digitale e della pandemia di COVID-19 sulla salute mentale delle persone nella società. La ricerca identifica anche statisticamente le malattie mentali che sono diventate sempre più diffuse tra le persone, in particolare tra i giovani, tra cui depressione, disturbi decisionali, distrazioni, stress, … Di seguito, la tesi affronta le caratteristiche di un buono spazio comune in termini di interazione sociale attraverso la ricerca e la revisione di casi studio di successo in quest’area per costruire un’immagine di un buon spazio comune in alloggi temporanei. I dormitori per studenti sono considerati luoghi target. Questi spazi hanno il potenziale per essere il posto migliore per i giovani adulti per connettersi con altri che non conoscono già solo per motivi ad esempio: familiari o di vicinato o per altre scelte involontarie. Luoghi in cui molte persone provenienti da tutto il mondo vengono riunite casualmente con culture diverse, lingue diverse, background diversi ed età diverse. Non solo le persone citate, ma anche le persone con cui viviamo nello stesso paese e anche nella stessa città, ma con i quali non abbiamo avuto la possibilità prima di interagire e socializzare. L’Isaac Newton Residenza Milano (Uno dei dormitori del Politecnico di Milano) è stato selezionato come caso di studio per ridisegnare il suo spazio comune. Per comprendere meglio le esigenze dei residenti è stato creato e distribuito un questionario. Abbiamo reso più pratico ed efficiente il percorso di realizzazione del progetto raccogliendo più di 200 risposte e scoprendo che tipo di opinione hanno i residenti di questi luoghi sugli spazi pubblici. Inoltre è stata presa in considerazione l’idea di creare un’applicazione con l’obiettivo di rafforzare la connessione interna alla comunità. in modo che i residenti possano utilizzarlo per organizzare un’attività o partecipare ad altre attività. Inoltre, consente ai residenti di connettersi tra loro più facilmente con caratteristiche e preferenze reciproche e di sviluppare relazioni. e molte altre caratteristiche che sono trattate in maggior dettaglio nella tesi.
