Urban revival of social housing : the case of Mazzini neighbourhood, Milan

Social housing clustered areas often suffer from environmental and social problems. These often manifest themselves in a lack of neighbourhood connections, inadequate infrastructure, precarious environmental conditions and fragile social relations. For such residential areas with specific characteristics, this thesis attempts to explore the potential spatial and community problems of this particular type of neighbourhood and to designate strategies for its regeneration. The object of the study was identified as the Mazzini area in the Corvetto region of south-east Milan, as an area where social housing clusters were built at an early stage. The daily activities of the residential area are protected through the maintenance and creation of suitable public spaces. The current condition of the architecture and environment of the Mazzini area was studied in order to provide a basis for renovation. Furthermore, the thesis proposes the transformation of the neighbourhood in terms of the quality of the public space for activities, the area of green space and the interaction with the neighbourhood, taking into account suitable examples of actual urban transformation. In addition, it can be concluded that the quality of physical space and the maintenance of activity spaces, especially the establishment of community reconnections, are of particular importance in public housing areas, and that these aspects are of primary concern in the regeneration of public housing areas.

Le aree di edilizia popolare soffrono spesso di problemi ambientali e sociali. Questi si manifestano spesso in una mancanza di collegamenti tra i quartieri, infrastrutture inadeguate, condizioni ambientali precarie e relazioni sociali fragili. Per queste aree residenziali con caratteristiche specifiche, questa tesi tenta di esplorare i potenziali problemi spaziali e comunitari di questo particolare tipo di quartiere e di designare strategie per la sua rigenerazione. L'oggetto dello studio è stato individuato nell'area Mazzini, nel quartiere Corvetto, a sud-est di Milano, come zona in cui sono stati costruiti precocemente dei poli di edilizia popolare. Le attività quotidiane dell'area residenziale sono tutelate attraverso il mantenimento e la creazione di spazi pubblici adeguati. Lo stato attuale dell'architettura e dell'ambiente dell'area Mazzini è stato studiato al fine di fornire una base per la ristrutturazione. Inoltre, la tesi propone la trasformazione del quartiere in termini di qualità dello spazio pubblico per le attività, dell'area verde e dell'interazione con il quartiere, prendendo in considerazione esempi adeguati di trasformazione urbana. Inoltre, si può concludere che la qualità dello spazio fisico e il mantenimento degli spazi di attività, in particolare la creazione di connessioni comunitarie, sono di particolare importanza nelle aree di edilizia residenziale pubblica e che questi aspetti sono di primaria importanza nella rigenerazione delle aree di edilizia residenziale pubblica.
