Between city and the sea : revitalization of baltic bulk terminal at the sea port of St. Petersburg

The Sea Port of St. Petersburg is a major port in Russia. Established along with the city itself, the development of the Sea Port went in line with the history of the city. After centuries’ of development, the Sea Port has became a recorder of the industrial history of the city, possessing plenty of industrial heritages, including the Kirov Factory and the Sea Canal, and many other historic structures of significance. In recent years, as pollution problem continued to haunt the Port, there has been discussion about moving the Port outside of the city, and some efforts has been made to reallocate some of the Port services. The reallocation of the Port will pose great impact on the port itself and its surrounding industrial area, and the future of the industrial structures inside the Port would be an important issue for discussion. This thesis aims to analyse the potential prospect of regeneration of industrial heritage inside the Port by surveying into the history and state-of-the-art of the Port. On the other hand, by making revitalization plan for one of the most significant industrial structure in the Port--the Baltic Bulk Terminal, I explore the relevant factors and possibilities in industrial heritage revitalization.

Il porto marittimo di San Pietroburgo è un importante porto della Russia. Istituito insieme alla città stessa, lo sviluppo del Porto Marittimo è andato in linea con la storia della città. Dopo secoli di sviluppo, il porto marittimo è diventato un registratore della storia industriale della città, possedendo numerosi patrimoni industriali, tra cui la fabbrica di Kirov e il canale marittimo, e molte altre strutture storiche significative. Negli ultimi anni, poiché il problema dell'inquinamento ha continuato a perseguitare il porto, si è discusso sullo spostamento del porto fuori città e sono stati compiuti alcuni sforzi per riallocare alcuni dei servizi portuali. La riallocazione del porto avrà un grande impatto sul porto stesso e sull'area industriale circostante e il futuro delle strutture industriali all'interno del porto sarebbe un argomento di discussione importante. Questa tesi si propone di analizzare la potenziale prospettiva di rigenerazione del patrimonio industriale all'interno del Porto attraverso un'indagine sulla storia e lo stato dell'arte del Porto. D'altra parte, realizzando un piano di rivitalizzazione per una delle strutture industriali più significative del porto, il Baltic Bulk Terminal, esploro i fattori e le possibilità rilevanti nella rivitalizzazione del patrimonio industriale.
