In this work, we propose a novel approach to distributed 3D sound source localization and tracking based on networks of linear microphone arrays, each of which estimates 2D Direction Of Arrival (DOA). The proposed method is computationally distributed and eliminates the need for a specialized node to collect and process all the information. Sound source localization is achieved by considering the task as a distributed optimization problem solved with diffusion strategies. Moreover, diffusion allows us to introduce cooperation between sensor nodes (i.e., local microphone arrays) to improve the localization accuracy. To this end, five different cooperation strategies that are meant to reduce the contribution of noisy microphone arrays are proposed. Some cooperation strategies attempt to learn the error statistics of each sensor node and penalize the noisiest arrays. Others are based on geometrical considerations of the problem at hand. We also perform an analysis of different working conditions, taking into account the frequency with which the DOA estimates are available to the nodes for processing. Such an analysis helps in understanding which cooperation strategies are the most appropriate for each configuration. The presented results show that the proposed method is generally more accurate than state-of-the-art 3D localization techniques.

Abstract
The presented results show that the proposed method is generally more accurate than state-of-the-art 3D localization techniques.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
