Terahertz (THz) frequencies (0.1-10THz) are at the heart of several enabling multidisciplinary technologies, including security, telecommunications, medical diagnostics and imaging. However, most current THz components are large, bulky and impractical. On the other hand, the miniaturisation is extremely challenging due to the diffraction limit for such long wavelength radiation, that we cannot avoid using conventional photonic components based on dielectrics. In this work we will search for a new configuration of a waveguide structure that can be operated in the Terahertz range, combining dielectric and metallic (i.e. plasmonic) materials. These bring together two important advantages: the reliability and wideness of use of THz pulses and the superlocalization of plasmonic metal waveguides. The study of the propagation of hybrid modes in such couplers is the core of the thesis. This is done by using a finite element method (FEM) software for the electromagnetic modelling (COMSOL Multiphysics) and MATLAB for the post processing. The realisation of the chip is done using the resources in the Sydney Nanoscience Hub and the experimental studies will be carried out in the Terahertz Laboratory of the School of Physics of The University of Sydney. This technology aims to facilitate the study of several otherwise inaccessible biophysical processes, for example intermolecular dynamics inside nanometer scale volumes at its finest.
