The purpose of this work is to investigate the impact of social capital on Open Innovation activities. Indeed, since the Open Innovation paradigm has redefined how firms attain long-term competitiveness by following a more collaborative and distributed approach, the importance of social capital in Open Innovation settings has been recognized. Therefore, forming relationships among individuals may aid in the identification of new ideas, information, opportunities, and tangible and intangible resources, which can help to accelerate the growth of innovation. Particularly, the work intends to provide a comprehensive understanding of the principles that innovators may use to exploit social capital for the success of their innovation project, as well as the mechanisms by which social capital can affect innovation. In the thesis, an exploratory multi-case study analysis is carried out. The study's findings allow to assert not only that social capital is inextricably tied to Open Innovation practices, but also that there are a number of activities that may be undertaken to strategically deploy social capital. Indeed, social capital may be successfully used to drive innovation through three distinct phases: building, activating, and leveraging. For each of these phases, managerial levers need to be followed. The study demonstrates that strategic social capital management may be beneficial to entrepreneurs and managers. Indeed, social capital may be a critical asset to possess for those who decide to embark on an innovative endeavor, since it can not only identify latent market demand or business prospects, but also recover resources. Furthermore, the mechanism identified can assist managers, serving as a reference to verify whether social capital resources are being used strategically and corroborating whether the practices in place within the organization are coherent with the objectives pursued, allowing for redirection when necessary.

Abstract
Furthermore, the mechanism identified can assist managers, serving as a reference to verify whether social capital resources are being used strategically and corroborating whether the practices in place within the organization are coherent with the objectives pursued, allowing for redirection when necessary.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
