During last decades, the Alps suffered a significant transformation, which has rendered these territories largely fragile and marginal, marked by progressive depopulation. They lost their dignity becoming only places meant to mere touristic purpose, betraying their relationship with the environment and the surrounding buildings. Depopulation leads to the progressive abandonment of living and productive spaces, wiping out the skillful centuries-old structure of Alpine culture. This work intends to verify the possibility and to identify the strategic and design methods for a recovery and re-use of the soil, buildings and architecture of these abandoned mountain sites. The methodological and planning steps involve two phases: the first concerns a historical-cultural-architectural analysis of the territory, which is preparatory to the second phase, mainly strategic and project-oriented. Rethinking the highlands as possible spaces can also be a solution to limit the cementification of soils and the excessive urbanisation of the lowlands. The subject of this project research is Val Mastallone, in Piedmont, one of the main valleys in Alta Valsesia, at the foot of Monte Rosa. The territory is mostly mountainous and presents a rich natural and architectural heritage, recognised and characterised by the existence of the peculiar Walser culture. The difficult accessibility to the valley, due to its complex orography, and its introspective connotation have allowed the artistic-architectural tradition to be preserved almost unchanged till nowadays, but, at the same time, it represents the main cause of the strong depopulation at present and the consequent abandonment of the territory. The leitmotif of this work has been the effort to develop strategies and projects able to stop the abandonment and degradation of these places, by enhancing the present potential and resources, possible driving forces for recovery and revitalisation. The project strategy interprets the territorial, local and architectural scale through the development of a pilot project in the municipality of Rimella, located at the head of the valley. Thanks to the inclusion of new services, the aim of this project is to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants as well as to increase the arrival of the 'other tourism' in order to support the beginning of a revitalisation process. This architectural project defines new grafts that interpret the relationship with the pre-existing buildings, in terms of morphology, typology and technology, and with the particular orography of the site.
"Architetture silenziose", ovvero spontanee, vernacolari e rurali.

Abstract
"Silent architectures", or spontaneous, vernacular and rural architectures. These adjectives refer to all those Alpine architectures without architects that are undergoing a progressive abandonment, slowly approaching an "eternal silence". This architectural project defines new grafts that interpret the relationship with the pre-existing buildings, in terms of morphology, typology and technology, and with the particular orography of the site.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
