The peculiarity of the context, in which the market is located, is the presence of farmsteads, and the desire to establish a strong link with them, understood as a resource for zero kilometre products, is defined as primary. With this awareness, the market can ‘make room’ within a globalised, increasingly competitive, increasingly fast-paced world. The challenge is to emerge within a world flattened in its local identities, giving rise to new forms of sociality due to the mixing of different realities.

Abstract
The thesis work deals with the redevelopment of the Covered Municipal Market in the Sant’Ambrogio district of Milan, through a design proposal regarding the state of the architecture, interweaving this more operative part with a reflection on the evolution of its spaces. The market, which historically has played a central role in urban life, as a place of exchange mainly for food products, is now transformed into a hybrid architecture that accommodates within itself a series of areas and weaves synergies with the territory, dialoguing with the other markets in the city’s network. The market today is “a more aware market”, because it has to consider a multiplicity of spheres that are summed up in a key word that has operationally guided the project choices - sustainability - declined into environmental, food and social sustainability. In approaching the existing structure of the Sant’Ambrogio Market, in the act of designing the project, we set out to listen to its specificities and the peculiarities of the place in order to enhance them. A conservative approach was favoured, and the additions made, which involved adding a volume to the existing one and defining a continuous and more flexible interior space, were carried out with respect for the environment and the existing architecture, allowing them to be recognisable. The challenge is to emerge within a world flattened in its local identities, giving rise to new forms of sociality due to the mixing of different realities.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
