Un luogo aperto alla città : strategia per il recupero dell'ex monastero di San Benedetto a Cremona

This thesis research focuses on a reuse of the former benedictine monastery in Cremona, an 11th-century building that is currently in a state of disrepair, with the exception of a portion of the south wing illegally occupied by a cattery. The complex is divided into three properties: the portion that corresponds to almost the entirety of the former monastery building belongs to the Stauffer Foundation; the remaining body of the external church and the entrance, together with the more recent body built during the military phase, is owned by the State Property Office; the external buildings, also built during the phase when the area was converted into barracks, belong to the Municipality of Cremona. The lack of a strategic vision on an urban scale and the bad state of conservation contributed to the abandonment. In 2021, at the behest of the Soprintendenza Archeologica Belle Arti e Paesaggio di Cremona Lodi Mantova, the 'MIC2021' plan was drawn up, aimed at redeveloping the Cremona area of the former monasteries. From the dialogue between the Superintendency, the Municipality of Cremona, the State Property Office and the Stauffer Foundation comes the project that envisages moving the current Cremonese headquarters of the State Archives, currently located in a rented building. We are entering a historical moment in which the State Archives are coming to the end of a phase of their existence, without a clear idea yet of what realistic destiny is reserved for them in the future. The purpose of a State Archive is to conserve the products of State administrations in the territory of its own jurisdiction, i.e., in the case in point, the province of Cremona, and to profitably carry out its institutional tasks and play an active role in the conservation and enhancement of the historical memory of the territory. The project aims to maintain these basic essential functions, integrating them with a new vision of service to the citizen, which can give a new lease of life to this institution. The attempt is therefore not to merely compartmentalise the current State Archives, but to integrate functions and spaces that trigger a change with a broader social and cultural root that tends to redefine the expectations of citizens, institutions and the community at large regarding archives.

La presente ricerca di tesi è incentrata su un intervento di riuso dell’ex monastero benedettino di Cremona, un complesso edificato a partire dal XI secolo, attualmente in stato di abbandono, fatta eccezione per una porzione dell’ala sud, occupata abusivamente da un gattile. Il complesso è diviso in tre proprietà: la porzione a cui corrisponde la quasi interezza dell’edificio dell’antico monastero appartiene alla Fondazione Stauffer; il rimanente corpo della chiesa esterna e dell’ingresso, insieme al corpo più recente realizzato nella fase militare, è di proprietà del Demanio dello Stato; gli edifici esterni, sempre realizzati nella fase in cui l’area fu convertita a caserma, sono di pertinenza del Comune di Cremona. La mancanza di una visione strategica a scala urbana e il pessimo stato di conservazione, hanno contribuito a determinare l’abbandono. Nel 2021, per volontà della Soprintendenza Archeologica Belle Arti e Paesaggio di Cremona Lodi Mantova, viene elaborato il piano “MIC2021”, teso alla riqualificazione dell’area cremonese degli ex monasteri. Dal dialogo fra Soprintendenza, Comune di Cremona, Demanio dello Stato e Fondazione Stauffer nasce il progetto che prevede lo spostamento nel complesso della sezione cremonese dell’Archivio di Stato, attualmente collocata in un edificio in locazione. In questo momento storico gli archivi di Stato stanno esaurendo una fase della loro esistenza, senza che si intraveda ancora chiaramente quale realistico destino è ad essi riservato nel futuro. Un Archivio di Stato si prefigge lo scopo di conservare i prodotti delle amministrazioni dello Stato nel territorio di propria competenza, quindi, nel caso in questione, della provincia di Cremona, e quello di svolgere proficuamente i propri compiti istituzionali e di sostenere un ruolo attivo nella conservazione e nella valorizzazione della memoria storica del territorio. È proprio a partire da queste “due anime” che il progetto si pone l’obiettivo di mantenere queste funzioni essenziali di base, predisponendo spazi e usi finalizzati a restituire nuove frontiere del servizio al cittadino, che possa dare uno slancio a questa istituzione. Il tentativo è quindi quello di non effettuare un mero spostamento per compartimenti dell’attuale Archivio di Stato, né di mantenere gli attuali servizi, ma integrare delle funzioni e spazi che inneschino un cambiamento con una più ampia radice sociale e culturale che tenda a ridefinire le aspettative nei confronti degli archivi da parte dei cittadini, delle altre istituzioni e della collettività più in generale.
