SEED : sustainability, energy and environmental development : spazi per l'arte contemporanea, nuovo centro culturale a La valletta, Malta

This thesis proposes the design of contemporary art spaces in a new cultural center near the Msida Bastion Historic Garden in Valletta, Malta. The design process began by taking consideration of the area and the territorial peculiarities that characterize it, including the historical pre-existences - city walls, Msida Bastion Historic Garden, public library -, the many height differences in the project area and the low presence of green areas in the surrounding areas. The project aims to develop an area capable of becoming a new attractive, cultural, educational center and capable of raising awareness of the issues of sustainability, biodiversity and environmental development of the surrounding area. Given the premises, the main themes of this thesis were the respecting of historical pre-existences, the maintenance and expansion of existing green areas in order to create both spatial and visual continuity between history and nature. The new cultural center creates a symbolic space: the park, a place for gathering, culture and entertainment, enclosed between two bodies that mark the beginning and the end of a path to raise awareness of the themes described above. This is underlined by the structure of the museum itinerary, that allows visitors to enjoy an experience not only inside the building. Once the museum volumes had been architecturally defined, the project was analyzed in its different aspects: technological, structural and energetical. To ensure large spans, the structure was designed in prestressed reinforced concrete and honeycomb floors with dry finishes, while, during the engineering phase of the finishes, the focus was on using local materials or from recycled supply chain. Furthermore, from the energy point of view, the project was designed to allow energy self-sufficiency, with a surplus capable of meeting the needs of external users as well.

La tesi propone la progettazione di spazi per l’arte contemporanea in un nuovo centro culturale nei pressi del Msida Bastion Historic Garden a La Valletta, Malta. Il percorso di progettazione è iniziato prendendo coscienza dell'area e delle peculiarità territoriali che la caratterizzano tra cui le preesistenze storiche - cinta murarie, Msida Bastion Historic Garden, biblioteca pubblica - i numerosi dislivelli presenti nell'area di progetto e la scarsa presenza di aree verdi nelle zone limitrofe. Il progetto si pone come obiettivo quello di sviluppare un'area in grado di diventare un nuovo polo attrattivo, culturale, educativo ed in grado di sensibilizzare gli utenti sui temi della sostenibilità, biodiversità e sviluppo ambientale del territorio circostante. Viste le premesse, i temi principali del percorso di tesi sono stati il rispetto delle preesistenze storiche, il mantenimento e l'ampliamento delle aree verdi esistenti al fine di creare una continuità sia spaziale che visiva tra storia e natura. Il nuovo centro culturale forma uno spazio simbolo: il parco, luogo di aggregazione, cultura e svago, racchiuso tra due corpi che segnano l'inizio e la fine di un percorso di sensibilizzazione dei temi sopra descritti. Ciò viene sottolineato dalla struttura del percorso museale che permette ai visitatori di godere di un'esperienza non solo interna all'edificio. Definiti architettonicamente i volumi museali, si è proceduto all'analisi del progetto nei suoi diversi aspetti: tecnologico, strutturale ed energetico. Per garantire grandi luci la struttura è stata pensata in calcestruzzo armato precompresso e solai alveolari con finiture a secco, mentre, durante la fase di ingegnerizzazione delle finiture si è puntato ad utilizzare materiali locali o da filiera di riciclo. Inoltre, dal punto di vista energetico, il progetto è stato studiato per permettere l'autosufficienza energetica, con un surplus capace di soddisfare anche l'esigenza dei fruitori esterni.
