Athens central Station Park : a landscape proposal to recover a neglected core within a mediterranean metropolis

In an urban complex environment as exist in the main cities, composed of the overlapping of several systems and networks working together, the public space and particularly green areas, play an important role in the well-being of the population, the engagement of the systems and networks and the development of sustainable urban environments. The following work shows, through the design of a metropolitan park, a landscape proposal in the middle of the dense city of Athens in Greece. This proposal is based on the understanding of environmental issues, particularly the Urban Heat Island effect in the more dense areas of the city caused by mainly the quick development of the city in the XX Century, where the main urban plans and policies lead to a fast growth where the main ecological infrastructures where not consider, as a result, the city lacks a system of green infrastructure and therefore also other environmental issues. It is considered as well under an understanding of the urban system, seeking to propose a coherent design for a park in the actual train station Larissa. Following the governmental plans will become the New Railway Central Station in Athens, and, taking as a starting point the guideline which indicates the station will works completely underground, leaving the ground floor space as a valuable opportunity to provide to the dense city of Athens a pertinent green space. The intervention in such an important space in a particular city as Athens, lead to a deep understanding of the complex network in which the station is immersed, therefore an understanding of the several layers which compose the city is needed, from the urban infrastructure, social context, natural features, and environmental conditions. Always under the belief that parks and green spaces, especially in big cities, are a tool to aware people of the forgotten link with nature. Addressing in the same way, current important global problems related to sustainable environmental development.

In un ambiente urbano complesso come quello esistente nelle principali città, composto dalla sovrapposizione di più sistemi e reti che lavorano insieme, lo spazio pubblico, e in particolare le aree verdi, giocano un ruolo importante per il benessere della popolazione, l'impegno dei sistemi e lo sviluppo di ambienti urbani sostenibili. Il lavoro seguente mostra, attraverso la progettazione di un parco metropolitano, una proposta paesaggistica nel mezzo della densa città di Atene in Grecia. Questa proposta si basa sulla comprensione delle questioni ambientali, in particolare gli effetti delle Isole di Calore nelle aree urbane più dense causati principalmente dal rapido sviluppo della città nel XX secolo. I piani regolatori e le politiche urbane portano ad una rapida crescita, dove i principali sistemi ecologici non vengono considerati, portando ad una città priva di infrastrutture verdi e di conseguenza ad altre problematiche ambientali. Inoltre, si considera una comprensione del sistema urbano, cercando di proporre un progetto coerente per un nuovo parco nell'attuale area della Stazione ferroviaria di Larissa. In accordo con i Piani Governativi, il sito diventerà la Nuova Stazione Centrale Ferroviaria di Atene, le cui linee guida del progetto indicano che la stazione opererà completamente sotto terra. Il punto di partenza sarà dunque uno spazio libero al piano terra, diventando una preziosa opportunità per fornire alla densa città di Atene uno spazio verde appropriato. L'intervento su uno spazio così importante in relazione con una città particolare come Atene porta ad una profonda comprensione della complessa rete in cui è immersa la stazione. È necessaria, quindi, una comprensione dei vari livello che compongono la città, dall'infrastruttura urbana, i veri contesti sociali, le caratteristiche naturali e condizioni ambientali. Sempre nella convinzione che i parchi e gli spazi verdi, soprattutto nelle grandi città, siano uno strumento per sensibilizzare le persone sul legame dimenticato con la natura. Affrontanfo allo stesso modo le attuali problematiche globali legate allo sviluppo ambientale sostenibile.
