The new legacy : designing a contemporary dwelling while leaning on the Belgrade School of Housing

The indisputable importance of habitat, an elemental particle of human society, is described in an endless number of analyses trying to define its every aspect, from its roots to this present moment. This constantly evolving theme tied to the physical aspect of humans’ everyday life, their mutual relations, and connections with the environment, is continuously being affected by numerous, almost countless factors. Today, in the case of the city of Belgrade, housing typologies developed as a result of design practices, and the market seems to be no longer capable of coping with the rapid transformations of our lifestyles and the new demands and needs that are created. Therefore, in this challenge to answer current housing issues in Belgrade, this master thesis is formed around the hypothesis that the development of Belgrade housing can be based on the synthesis of the local built tradition and heritage with the global contemporary housing trends. The multidisciplinary nature of this research combines theoretical and practical data on the topic of Belgrade’s housing problems, analysis of housing in Belgrade from its roots until the present day, recent local and international topics, as well as multiple international project references. The intention is to understand the reasons and causes of contemporary problems, then to be aware of the housing legacy and with the understanding of current housing topics to test combined knowledge through a design project. The part of the thesis regarding the design project does not intend to produce a general housing model, but to consider the necessity of combining the already established principles from the past with the ever-changing contemporary needs.

L’indiscutibile importanza dell’habitat, particella elementare della società umana, è descritta in un numero infinito di analisi che cercano di definirne ogni aspetto, dalle radici a questo momento presente. Questo tema in continua evoluzione legato all’aspetto fisico della vita quotidiana dell’uomo, all sue relazioni reciproche e alle connessioni con l’ambiente, continuamente influenzato da numerosi, quasi innumerevoli fattori. Oggi, nel caso della città di Belgrado, le tipologie abitative si sono sviluppate a seguito di pratiche progettuali e il mercato sembra non essere più in grado di far fronte alle rapide trasformazioni dei nostri stili di vita e alle nuove esigenze e bisogni che si creano. Pertanto, in questa sfida per rispondere alle attuali questioni abitative a Belgrado, questa tesi di laurea si forma attorno all’ipotesi che lo sviluppo dell’edilizia abitativa di Belgrado possa essere basato sulla sintesi della tradizione e del patrimonio edilizio locale con le tendenze abitative contemporanee globali. La natura multidisciplinare di questa ricerca combina dati teorici e pratici sul tema dei problemi abitativi di Belgrado, analisi deli alloggi a Belgrado dalle sue radici fino giorni nostri, recenti argomenti locali e internazionali, nonche molteplici riterimenti internazionali. L’intenzione è quella di comprendere le ragioni e le cause dei problemi contemporanei, quindi di essere consapevoli dell eredità abitativa e con la comprensione delle attuali tematiche abitative per testare la conoscenza combinata attraverso progetto di design. La parte della tesi relativa al progetto non intende produrre un modello abitativo general, ma considerare la necessità di coniugare i principi già affermati del passato con le mutevoli esigenze contemporanee.
