The application of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and the metaverse in the cultural heritage sector has enabled us to move beyond the idea of thinking of a valuable asset as tied to a particular place. In fact, it has given people the opportunity to discover, research, and enjoy history and cultural heritage that previously would have been inaccessible or lost. From an overview of the function of cultural heritage in modern society, we focus on its new uses, while maintaining awareness of its historical significance and its ever-present relationship to the digital world. The goal is to investigate potential innovations for the future, while addressing the difficulty of distinguishing the real world from the virtual world that is increasingly present in everyday life. Evidence of the potential links between cultural heritage and the digital world is provided by the “ImmerSicily” project proposal, which consists of an itinerary created in the city of Palermo, with the aim of bringing back to memory the numerous Art Nouveau villas that were destroyed by the Mafia during the “Sack of Palermo,” as well as on the events of the 1969 theft of Caravaggio’s painting “The Nativity with St. Francis and St. Lawrence”, now considered one of the greatest losses in the history of art. Thanks to the integration of digital tools, installations, exhibitions and immersive spaces, visitors will be allowed to discover the heritage in new and different ways, with the aim of communicating the value of a cultural heritage that was till now considered lost, while not neglecting the social aspects. “ImmerSicily” is only at the base of the whole thinking: the ultimate goal is toward “ImmersItaly,” expanding the Sicilian project to the lost cultural heritage of the entire country. This approach will reveal the stories behind the alterations that have brought cultural heritage to its current state, with the hope that shared awareness will lead to the enhancement and preservation of cultural heritage for future generations.

Abstract
This approach will reveal the stories behind the alterations that have brought cultural heritage to its current state, with the hope that shared awareness will lead to the enhancement and preservation of cultural heritage for future generations.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
