The surroundings of the Visconteo Bridge: where the water meets the land

The aim of the thesis research conducted is to analyse and redevelop a small reality that has always been linked to an imposing monument: the Visconteo Bridge. Borghetto, a hamlet of Valeggio sul Mincio, has its ancient roots in history. The development of the place was made possible by the presence of water. The latter has in fact regulated the relationship between man and nature, marked the boundaries, provided work and marked the rhythm of the mills. Defined as one of the “most beautiful villages in Italy”, where nature blends with history, to date it does not have a complete tourist offer beyond catering. RevIVER, our thesis project proposal, takes its name from the desire to redevelop this area that constantly relates with the river Mincio. One of the main objectives is to mend, through a new river crossing system, two banks, east and west, which today struggle to be in relation. This is made stronger by the design of an architectural system consisting of two buildings that, although they have different functions, are complementary. Different in that the larger building, used as a vinery, is closely linked to the strong wine vocation that the Veneto region has always had; the other, on the other hand, is conceived as a flexible multifunctional space that makes up for the lack of meeting places and culture. Finally, important is the focus on the environment and soft mobility, which is the connecting element between the Visconteo Bridge and the area further south near the tip of Borghetto, together with two other routes that favour the development of the village.

Obiettivo della ricerca di tesi condotta è analizzare e riqualificare una piccola realtà da sempre legata ad un imponente monumento: il Ponte Visconteo. Borghetto, frazione di Valeggio sul Mincio, affonda le sue antiche radici nella storia. Lo sviluppo del luogo è stato reso possibile dalla presenza dell'acqua. Quest'ultima ha infatti regolato il rapporto tra uomo e natura, segnato i confini, fornito lavoro e scandito il ritmo dei mulini. Definito uno dei “borghi più belli d'Italia”, dove la natura si fonde con la storia, ad oggi non dispone di un'offerta turistica completa al di là della ristorazione. RevIVER, la nostra proposta progettuale di tesi prende il nome dalla volontà di riqualificare quest'area che si relaziona costantemente con il fiume Mincio. Uno degli obiettivi principali è quello di ricucire, attraverso un nuovo sistema di attraversamento fluviale, due sponde, est e ovest, che oggi faticano a essere in relazione. Ciò è reso più forte dalla progettazione di un sistema architettonico costituito da due edifici che, pur avendo funzioni diverse, sono complementari. Diverse in quanto l'edificio più grande, adibito a cantina, è strettamente legato alla forte vocazione vinicola che il Veneto ha sempre avuto; l'altro, invece, è concepito come uno spazio multifunzionale flessibile che sopperisce alla mancanza di luoghi di incontro e di cultura. Infine, importante è l'attenzione all'ambiente e alla mobilità dolce che rappresenta l'elemento di raccordo tra il Ponte Visconteo e l'area più a sud in prossimità della punta di Borghetto, insieme ad altri due percorsi che vanno a favorire lo sviluppo del borgo.
