The vineyard landscape of Monferrato was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a ‘cultural landscape’ in 2014. Here, the risk is to abandon agricultural production in favour of consumerist tourist economies, which can damage territorial authenticity. Bucolic landscapes across the world are subject to considerable changes, foremost being the continuous and slow depopulation of towns and villages. There is also a considerable lack of amenities and facilities to both the residents and visitors. This change in population and lack of use of spaces causes devastating impacts on environmental systems, as well as, on the tangible and intangible heritage of entire regions. The situation becomes more ambiguous for cultural landscapes, especially those internationally recognized as distinctive i.e., inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Based on the analysis, we noticed that there were many underlying issues that were still prevalent especially after the inscription was done. The local people felt a loss of their identity and heritage, the young people were migrating in search of better opportunities and better way of living, the tourists didn`t have convenient transport and amenities were lacking, and the elderly didn't have enough facilities and infrastructure that made this space attractive for them. Overall, the common spaces, like the Piazzas were either neglected, used for parking or were just abandoned. This project aims to develop a better understanding of the relationship between Monferrato and the local communities. Thereby, creating an identity without neglecting the people, the connections and the wine-producing heritage. The three main strategies involved are: STRATEGY 1 | Creating Connections through a linear corridor STRATEGY 2 | Agrotourism and Cultural Tourism within hollowing communes STRATEGY 3 | View Framing A pathway to restore the existing roads and trails; to preserve and regenerate the vineyard landscape and develop a system of functional vegetation for changing seasons. The Ecological trail will be developed on the outward Main roadway around the urban core area. A secondary trail will be developed that can combine the remaining features related to cultural heritage. This will increase a natural progression and will link the urban area to the vineyards, changing from a static to a dynamic landscape. The green trail generates a constant change all the time within the landscape. The production of smaller communities and new green spaces creates a new meaning, which can influence conservation activities, and the constantly changing landscape that will give the area a strong identity.

Abstract
The production of smaller communities and new green spaces creates a new meaning, which can influence conservation activities, and the constantly changing landscape that will give the area a strong identity.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
