Reinventing my city : project proposal of a civic center for the city of Foggia

The reason for pursuing this thesis is to elaborate on and explore the theme of the growth of the sense of community in the City where I was born: Foggia. The inherent complexity of sense of community, especially in times of rapid societal change, is a rich ground for investigation and research, and likewise a great forum for imagination. The purpose of this thesis is to produce a visionary and speculative set of design iterations based on future predictions of the city. It dives into a imaginary domain of design, not necessarily constrained by regulations. To bring the knowledges acquired during the last years of study and the approach taken from my working experiences to a, by me, familiar context, is a great opportunity to explore these topics with an added layer of depth and sensibility. “It is the ugliest city in Italy”, said Alberto Moravia in the 1970s, listing Foggia along with Calcutta and La Paz among the ugliest cities in the world. The journalist Rino Tommasi said that Foggia reminded him of “the squalor of some Soviet cities”. This thesis aims to investigate and explore the reasons why this City is so undervalued and diminished by the rest of Italy, what makes the inhabitants feel a sense of mistrust towards the future and what would provide a new space for the community within the City. My intervention follows the aim of Reinventing Cities call for proposals, which has the same intentions that I set with my project: to regenerate urban areas in a state of decay, inviting planners to bring new changes on an urban scale with this intervention. The goal is to bring effects on the habits of the new generations and how they experience the city, anticipating and adapting to future needs. My proposal for the Civic Center started from a vision of a sustainable and inclusive future for the city of Foggia and takes shape with a building that incorporates recreational functions by involving citizens.

Il proposito del mio elaborato di tesi è quello di approfondire il tema della valorizzazione del senso di comunità nella città in cui sono nata: Foggia. L'intrinseca complessità del senso di comunità, soprattutto in tempi di rapidi cambiamenti sociali, è un ricco terreno di indagine e ricerca, e allo stesso modo un grande ambito di immaginazione. Lo scopo di questa tesi è generare un insieme visionario e speculativo di iterazioni progettuali basate sulle previsioni future della città. Si immerge in un dominio immaginario del design, non necessariamente vincolato dalle normative. Portare le conoscenze acquisite negli ultimi anni di studio e l'approccio delle mie esperienze lavorative in un contesto, per me, familiare, è una grande opportunità per esplorare questi temi con un ulteriore livello di profondità e sensibilità. "È la città più brutta d'Italia", diceva Alberto Moravia negli anni '70, elencando Foggia insieme a Calcutta e La Paz tra le città più brutte del mondo. Il giornalista Rino Tommasi disse che Foggia gli ricordava "lo squallore di alcune città sovietiche". Questa tesi si propone di indagare ed esplorare le ragioni per cui questa città è così sottovalutata e sminuita dal resto d'Italia, cosa fa sì che gli abitanti provino un senso di sfiducia verso il futuro e come potrebbe garantire un nuovo spazio per la comunità all'interno della città. Il mio intervento segue l'obiettivo del bando Reinventing Cities, che ha le stesse intenzioni che mi sono prefissata con il mio progetto: rigenerare aree urbane in stato di degrado, invitando i progettisti a portare nuovi cambiamenti a scala urbana con questo intervento. L'obiettivo è quello di portare effetti sulle abitudini delle nuove generazioni e sul modo in cui vivono la città, anticipando e adattandosi alle esigenze future. La mia proposta per il Centro Civico parte da una visione di un futuro sostenibile e inclusivo per la città di Foggia e prende forma con un edificio che incorpora funzioni ricreative coinvolgendo i cittadini.
