The body of inward expansion as Marchesini Group reorganization process

The project starts exploring the Marchesini group and its main issues, a company located in Pianoro (BO) that deals mainly with packaging machine production. According to this research, all the problems are related to the continuous and fast expansion of the company. The space does not expand homogeneously, with the group creating some logistical, identity, and environmental sustainability problems. The thesis then proceeds by analyzing the concept of expansion in different spheres and historical contexts, concluding that today, with the environmental premises of climate change, the concept of expansion has an increasingly hostile meaning and must be kept under control. Wondering how an expanding company can be sustainable today, the research came across the increasingly current theories of an economic degrowth society. The research then continued with an in-depth study on economic degrowth, its history, a vocabulary of new values ​​, and the creation of the project's concept: instead of an outward expansion, Marchesini would need an inward expansion. Inward expansion is a reorganization process of what already exists; it can generate space without expanding spatially with a movement of contraction and dilatation of existing space. Marchesini's productive process needs revision to prepare for society's economic degrowth and new values. Inward expansion is a process that can contract and expand some productive process' steps and generate new space. Inward expansion is liberating and, at the same time, painful and uncomfortable. It is a digestion process that transforms the space and makes it current.

Il progetto è iniziato con l'esplorazione del Gruppo Marchesini, azienda di Pianoro (BO) che si occupa principalmente di produzione di macchinari per il packaging farmaceutico, e le sue principali problematiche. Secondo questa analisi, tutti i problemi sono legati alla continua e veloce espansione dell'azienda. Lo spazio non si espande in maniera omogenea con l’azienda creando alcuni problemi logistici, identitari e di sostenibilità ambientale. La tesi continua analizzando il concetto di espansione in diversi ambiti e contesti storici, concludendo che oggi, con le premesse ambientali del cambiamento climatico, il concetto di espansione ha un significato sempre più ostile da tenere sotto controllo. Chiedendosi come un'azienda in espansione possa essere oggi sostenibile, la ricerca si è imbattuta nelle teorie sempre più attuali di una società verso decrescita economica attraverso un approfondimento su quest’ultima teoria, la sua storia, un vocabolario di nuovi valori, e la creazione del concept del progetto: invece di un'espansione verso l'esterno, Marchesini avrebbe bisogno di un'espansione verso l'interno. L'espansione verso l'interno è un processo di riorganizzazione di ciò che già esiste; può generare spazio senza espandersi spazialmente con un movimento di contrazione e dilatazione dello spazio esistente. Il processo produttivo di Marchesini ha bisogno di una revisione per prepararsi alla decrescita economica della società e a nuovi valori. L'espansione verso l'interno è un processo che può contrarre ed espandere alcune fasi del processo produttivo e generare nuovo spazio. Essa è liberatoria e, allo stesso tempo, dolorosa e scomoda. È un processo di digestione che trasforma lo spazio e lo rende attuale.
