This is a project about construction concept for further work with transformation and preservation. The project was developed is a building built in 1927, known as 'building 22080', inside the veterinary campus of the University of Milan. Over time, it had an addition made in 1967. So, today by preserving building 22080 I designed, a roof top addition, to transform it into a new usage as an archive with study and working places for students, exhibitions and conference room and keep it alive with a different identity. Meaning that this is a combination of addition, transformation and preservation to existing construction. Transformation and preservation of buildings have been a common architectural practice for years, with a clear vocation for sustainability and saving natural and economic resources. Preserving historical and architectural heritage which, thanks to this type of action, can continue to form part of the urban landscape and the collective memory. On the other hand, the nature of projects derived from these actions often generates attractive technical and compositional challenges which generally materialize in surprising buildings. Challenging architectural experiences which creates the complexity with the appearance of the existing building and context. I envisioned a regenerative life that will encourage new programs. At the beginning as a preliminary design approach, I tried to work with space and volume, not with flat surface, elevation or decor. The well-thought-out functional and volumetric organisation of the project was a priority for me, serving as a basis for further work with materials and details. ‘’Complexity versus simplicity.’’ My first aim was to choose the cleanest and simplest approach in this complexity architecture. Means that at first look something very simple, but strongly emotional and deep in its essence. The project, inspired by the components of existing building, so, it highlights the history itself. One of the main design approaches of positioning the main volume over the existing 1967 addition is to emphasize itself and its past with a cantilever and the new main entrance. This new cantilever (5m) has a very strong role in emphasizing the architectural approach and the existing structure. That is why I have dealt with finding a balance, dissolving and elaborating the structural solution of this building. In all these approaches, I have progressed by keeping environmental factors and energy conservation in mind in my search for solutions to problems. The other very important point was that to effectively use the existing building a clear vertical circulation, routing was needed. I solved the problem of vertical circulation, with a new addition to the existing staircase so, staircases highlighted the new entrance. The updated circulation has an important role to connect to the old with new. Also integrates the new functions by unifying the spaces with clear spatial connections throughout the building. The host and the guest - the old and the new have permanent interaction. Means not only ensamble of fragments, but also the changing of all campus and its surroundings and it is also the addition of a new layer to the collective memory.
