The following thesis paper presents a possible recovery project for the Sottrici Binda paper mill in Vaprio d'Adda, an illustrious example of the vast heritage of industrial archaeology that has developed over time along the banks of the river Adda. The paper mill, which has been in a state of decay and abandonment since 2007, stands on a natural island between the Adda and the Martesana canal and, together with the Velvis velvet mill, has been one of the driving forces of the Vaprio economy since the 19th century. The intrinsic characteristics of the complex combined with a targeted analysis of the possible new functions to be attributed to the architectural asset led us to hypothesise the transformation of the buildings of the former paper mill into a new centre for the production and listening to music, capable of attracting professionals in the sector and visitors from the neighbouring provinces and returning one of the symbolic places of their town to the citizens of Vaprio d'Adda. As a methodological principle, it was decided to conserve the main architectural artefacts, removing them only when the condition of the structures was not such as to guarantee safety for future occupants. The new buildings were conceived as volumes as autonomous as possible with respect to the existing structures, placed in the middle and within the buildings of the complex according to a principle of recognisability and compatibility. Based on this approach, we decided to give the complex the name "Symphonion", literally "music box", an ancient musical instrument and ancestor of the record player whose functioning can be compared to that of the music box. In fact, we identified a strong analogy between this instrument and the idea behind our project: to make the former paper mill complex a large container of music, whether heard by visitors or produced in the spaces provided for musicians.

Abstract
In fact, we identified a strong analogy between this instrument and the idea behind our project: to make the former paper mill complex a large container of music, whether heard by visitors or produced in the spaces provided for musicians.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
