Urban space as a place of discrimination : analysis of the perception of safety within two selected neighbourhoods in Milan and Nice

The research work of the presented thesis aims to analyse the city as a central element in people’s lives. In particular, how the figure of women is marginalised, discriminated against, and silenced due to the city’s own dynamics and to social hierarchies and subdivisions based on discrimination and power. Starting from a historical basis and highlighting how urban planning has neither incorporated women nor paid proper attention to them, various levels of discrimination are shown, together with specific data demonstrating that their voices have often not been heard. Both private and public sphere dynamics are analysed, focusing on the different degrees of violence that women suffer in their daily lives. The thesis is divided into two main parts: the first, theoretical in nature, involves the development of the theme of the city as a place of discrimination against women, relying on specific research questions, three for each of the three chapters in this section. The questions start from a more general level until they are translated into the field of urban planning. Then, using the research questions of the third chapter, the second part is developed, characterised by a personal in-situ analysis of two neighbourhoods: Lambrate in Milan and Riquier in Nice. The central theme of this second section is that of safety and security, perceived by the residents and by those who frequent the two selected neighbourhoods. This second part is supported by graphics, maps, photographs taken during the walked itineraries and, above all, the testimonies of the residents interviewed. Finally, the conclusions consider both the theoretical part and the analysis, proposing considerations for possible further development and paying particular attention to the research questions, verifying their validity following the findings made through the analysis. The entire research work is intended to be both analytical and a foundation upon which the topic can be expanded and/or applied to other case studies.

Il lavoro di ricerca della tesi presentata vuole analizzare la città come elemento centrale della vita delle persone. In particolare, come la figura delle donne risulti emarginata, discriminata, e silenziata a causa di dinamiche proprie della città e di gerarchie e suddivisioni sociali basate sulla discriminazione e sul potere. Partendo da basi storiche ed evidenziando come la pianificazione urbana non abbia inglobato le donne, né prestato la giusta attenzione nei loro confronti, vengono illustrati diversi piani di discriminazione, insieme a specifici dati a dimostrazione che, spesso, le loro voci non siano state ascoltate. Vengono analizzate sia dinamiche proprie alla sfera privata che a quella pubblica, soffermandosi sui diversi gradi di violenza subita. La tesi è divisa in due parti macroscopiche: la prima, di carattere teorico, prevede lo sviluppo del tema della città come luogo di discriminazione per le donne, affidandosi a definite domande di ricerca, tre per ciascuno dei tre capitoli di questa sezione. Le domande partono da un piano più generale fino ad arrivare alla traduzione in ambito di pianificazione urbana. Successivamente, utilizzando le domande di ricerca del terzo capitolo, si sviluppa la seconda parte, caratterizzata da un’analisi personale su due quartieri: Lambrate a Milano e Riquier a Nizza. Il tema centrale di questa seconda sezione è quello della sicurezza, sicurezza percepita dai residenti e da chi, in generale, vive e frequenta i due quartieri selezionati. Questa seconda parte è supportata da elaborati grafici, mappe, fotografie scattate durante gli itinerari percorsi e, soprattutto, dalle testimonianze dei residenti intervistati. Infine, le conclusioni fanno riferimento sia alla teoria che all’analisi in-situ, proponendo considerazioni per eventuali sviluppi successivi e ponendo particolare attenzione alle domande di ricerca, verificando la loro validità in seguito alle scoperte fatte tramite l’analisi. L’intero lavoro vuole essere sia analitico che una base di appoggio su cui poter ampliare il tema e/o applicarlo ad altri casi studio.
