Recent human-centered design studies show that the acoustic noise produced by a device can become detrimental both from a physical and psychological perspective. This gets even more relevant when dealing with bio-medical systems such as prostheses. The objec- tive of this work was initially the study of the vibro-acoustic behavior of an experimental transfemoral prosthesis where the noise source was located in the actuation system. The theoretical analysis was followed by an experimental test in an anechoic chamber to both characterize the device’s acoustic behavior and verify the numerical simulation procedure. The latter was exploited to acoustically optimize the prosthesis non-structural cover which encloses the actuation system and which turned out to be the resonating element of the prosthesis. The optimization was based on research work on the newest noise-reduction techniques, taking into account the prosthesis design requirements. The final solution fell into the usage of a periodic array of Helmholtz cell resonators placed on a modular panel that was mounted on the non-structural cover reaching a satisfactory average noise reduction of 6 dBA in the considered frequency range.

Abstract
The final solution fell into the usage of a periodic array of Helmholtz cell resonators placed on a modular panel that was mounted on the non-structural cover reaching a satisfactory average noise reduction of 6 dBA in the considered frequency range.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
