Circular Economy (CE) is one of the most discussed topics in the current landscape, both in the academic field and by organizations in different sectors. This topic comes alongside with the innovation enabled by the Digital Technologies (DTs) of Industry 4.0. Another key aspect within the CE theme is the importance of the design phase. Despite this, the literature focuses on the later stages related to the End of Life of the product, such as reuse, remanufacture, and recycle. This study seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the use of DTs and their enabling role in the implementation of CE in the design of products with electronic components. Notwithstanding the presence of comprehensive literature discussing these two topics separately, the lack of studies explicating the links between CE and DTs has been noted. This relationship, therefore, deserves further investigation. Hence, the aim is to investigate the existing relationships between Digital Technologies and Design features to understand how the application of DT can enable CE practices and the benefits that the adoption of these technologies can bring to the practical level. To achieve this preposed objective, a literature review was conducted on a wide range of academic articles and two case studies were conducted with the aim to find empirical evidence of the theory analysed. The main findings of the present study were: (a) the identification and investigation of the links between DTs and Design features enabling CE; (b) the exploration of the practical benefits that these applications can bring. The technologies considered were: Additive Manufacturing, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data Analytics, IoT, Blockchain, Virtual and Augmented Reality, Digital Twins, and Simulation. Eventually, a punctual research agenda was proposed to overcome the limitations of this work and pave the way for future research.
Le tecnologie prese in considerazione sono state: Additive Manufacturing, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data Analytics, IoT, Blockchain, Virtual and Augmented Reality, Digital Twins, e Simulazione.
