L'oro di Busto. L'istituto diffuso: nuovi spazi per la cinematografia a Busto Arsizio

The project named “L’oro di Busto” is a widespread intervention that takes place in the historic center of Busto Arsizio, involving five abandoned areas owned by the Municipality. The Municipality included the shoe factory named Calzaturificio Borri, the Austrian Prisons, the Casa Canavesi-Bossi, the Villa Bossi, and the former Austrian military garrison into a feasibility study that focuses on social housing. However, such a study is not taking into consideration the peculiarities of each building. The following thesis work aims to fill this gap by identifying suitable functions and spatiality for each building, through a deep understanding of the role they played in the local history. The research has shown that the areas are very different in various aspects (architectural elements, history, size, use, etc.); the project emphasizes these diversities by creating a new system on an urban scale that gives each place a role linked to its own uniqueness, guided by a common theme. As suggested by the title, which recalls a famous film by Vittorio De Sica, the common theme is the cinema industry education. The choice derives from another peculiarity of the city: the strong bond with cinema, born in the second half of the twentieth century. The relevance of this discipline, in more recent years, has led to the birth of the Busto Arsizio Film Festival and the Michelangelo Antonioni Film Institute. A discussion with the school brought to light the inadequacy of the available spaces, which are too small compared to the number of the annual enrollment applications. The project aims to provide the institute with new spaces and services by introducing new functions in line with the vocation of the buildings in the five areas in a state of neglect. Furthermore, the variety of locations will allow students to find inspiration for their projects and will offer them a series of real settings that will be revived through their work. The act of recreating a small Cinecittà in the heart of Busto Arsizio will enhance the past and present of the city at the same time, in a perspective turned to the future.

Il progetto denominato “L’oro di Busto” è un intervento diffuso che si articola nel centro storico di Busto Arsizio coinvolgendo cinque aree abbandonate di proprietà del Comune. La pubblica amministrazione ha incluso il Calzaturificio Borri, le Carceri austriache, la Casa Canavesi-Bossi, la Villa Bossi e l’ex Presidio Militare Austriaco in uno studio di fattibilità che punta sull’housing sociale. Ad ogni modo, tale studio non tiene in considerazione le peculiarità di ogni edificio. Il presente lavoro di tesi mira a colmare questa lacuna identificando funzioni e spazialità idonee per ogni edificio attraverso una profonda conoscenza del ruolo da essi ricoperto all’interno della storia locale. Dallo studio svolto spiccano le molteplici differenze tra le aree (elementi architettonici, storia, dimensioni, uso, ecc.); il progetto vuole enfatizzare tali diversità creando, grazie ad un tema comune, un nuovo sistema a scala urbana che attribuisca a ciascun luogo un ruolo legato alla propria unicità. Come suggerisce il titolo, che richiama un celebre film di Vittorio De Sica, il tema comune è l’istruzione cinematografica. La scelta deriva da un’altra peculiarità della città, il forte legame con la cinematografia nato nella seconda metà del XX secolo. In anni più recenti, la rilevanza di questa disciplina ha portato alla nascita del Busto Arsizio Film Festival e dell’Istituto Cinematografico Michelangelo Antonioni e, a seguito di un confronto con l’istituto, è emersa l’inadeguatezza degli spazi di cui oggi dispone, troppo ridotti in confronto alle numerose domande di ammissione ricevute annualmente. Il progetto si pone l’obiettivo di garantire alla struttura nuove iscrizioni e servizi inserendo nelle cinque aree in stato di abbandono nuove funzioni in linea con la vocazione degli edifici. La varietà dei luoghi permetterà agli studenti di trarre ispirazioni per i loro progetti ed offrirà loro una serie di ambientazioni reali a cui ridar vita con il loro lavoro. Ricreando una piccola Cinecittà nel cuore di Busto Arsizio si valorizzerà contemporaneamente il passato e il presente della città, con una prospettiva rivolta al futuro.
